Discover a colorful badlands on the Owyhee River, a <br />wilderness with cactus flowers on the John Day, and a viewpoint hike to a ranch at the east <br />end of the Columbia Gorge - plus a half-dozen little-known hot springs. As always, Sullivan <br />spices his illustrated talk with notes on the geology, wildlife, and history of the land. <br /> <br />Writer and photographer Adam Sawyer will focus on "Hiking Waterfalls in Oregon," on <br />Saturday, May 2, at 3 p.m., based on his guidebook of the same name. His informative and <br />humorous presentation of some of the state's most beautiful spots is "intended to entertain <br />and inspire everyone to get out and explore in all seasons." Some of the featured waterfalls <br />are remote while others are just a short hike from the trailhead. Some are gentle trickles and <br />others are roaring giants. "Yet all of them," Sawyer points out, "offer a peaceful escape and <br />are worth seeking out." <br /> <br />Admission is free. The current issue of Clean Water <br />Connections points readers to two prominent organizations – the American Association of Poison Control Centers and the <br />National Pesticide Information Center – that have teamed up to focus <br />on pesticide education and safety . A quick guide for understanding <br />signal words on product labels provides tips for safe use in homes and <br />storage areas. <br /> <br />A pet-friendly garden article provides recommendations for plant <br />choices that are safe for dogs and cats, considerations for landscape <br />design and an emergency phone number – just in case. Some vegetables <br />and flowers such as onions, lilies, and foxglove can present danger to <br />pets, while others like wheat grass and rose hips are good for pets. <br /> <br />Read about a restoration project for Amazon Creek that has helped <br />stabilize eroding creek banks. Large boulders, sloping banks and over <br />14,000 native plants now work together along the creek to provide flood protection and an active wildlife habitat.
