Eo <br /> <br />(7) <br /> <br />Maintaining~ remodeling and upgrading park, recreational and cultural <br />facilities in order to respond to changing uses as well as attaining and <br />preserving operational efficiency. <br /> <br />Amazon Park Background: <br /> <br />Amazon Park was initially acquired in 1947 through the Century Progress Fund. Additional <br />parcels were acquired and added to the park through the 1940's. Development of recreation <br />improvements began in the 1950's with construction of a ballfield and the swimming pool <br />opening. The creek was dramatically modified by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1958 when <br />it was enlarged, straightened, and partially lined with concrete. <br /> <br />The 1960's and 1970's saw additional recreation development with the playground, tennis <br />courts, Amazon Community Center, bike path, and running trail being constructed. In 1974, <br />Amazon Parkway was extended between 24th and 30th Avenue. In the late 1980's the <br />playground was remodeled, the Hilyard Community Center was opened and the <br />softball/soccer field was constructed south of 24th. In the 1990's the skatebowl was <br />constructed (one of the first of its kind) and the dog park was installed. <br /> <br />In 1994 a master plan process was undertaken to guide future development and identify areas <br />for preservation. The 1994 park master plan was created through a formal public process. <br />The resulting plan helped to guide decision making in the park for nearly a decade. It was <br />shortly after then that the LTD park and ride station and parking lot was constructed. <br /> <br />In 1998, the Parks and Open Space bond measure is passed by Eugene voters, allocating <br />$750,000 to improvements in Amazon Park. <br /> <br />Fo <br /> <br />The Amazon Park Master Plan was developed through an extensive public <br />involvement and research process from September 2003- June 2004. A series of <br />three workshops were held to provide information, collect input, and gage support <br />for the plan. Over 300 individuals participated in this process. <br /> <br />Advertisement for public involvement efforts included direct-mail postcard <br />invitations to over 4,000 neighbors, individuals and stakeholder organizations, <br />display ads in the Register Guard and Eugene Weekly, news releases, and posters <br />displayed in the park <br /> <br />A web page was developed for the design process, where all workshop results, <br />questionnaire results, and concept plans are posted for public intemet access. <br /> <br /> <br />
