The facilitator,
consultant Phyllis Lee, asked the participants to work in groups of six to eight, with a facilitator and note
taker at each table. The notes from all of the tables are presented in Attachment A. Staff has made the
notes available on the City’s internet site as well. A second document, Attachment B, groups the notes
from the tables into topical themes.

On August 16, Mayor Piercy and City Council Officers Solomon and Ortiz met to review an initial set
of next steps as follow-up to the meeting. They agreed to the formation of an ad hoc committee of
members of the communities of color to be co-facilitated by Council Officer Ortiz and a member of the
Human Rights Commission. The purpose of the committee would be to review the notes of the July 12
meeting and develop a supplemental action plan to the City Council priority on race.

RELATED CITY POLICIES
The workshop and any follow-up strategies associated with it are responsive to the City Council priority
to enhance understanding of race issues and improve race relationships.

COUNCIL OPTIONS

1. Suggest additional action steps for the ad hoc committee’s consideration.
2. Make any needed adjustments to the City Council race priority work plan after receiving the report
from the ad hoc committee.
3. Combination of options one and two.

CITY MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION

None.
L:\CMO\2006 Council Agendas\M060911\S060911C.doc
