<br />the City give him the lumber on condition that he clean up the premises and clear ~

<br />The City Recorder reported that on the 1st ofc1~rch he had purchased at the
<br />County Tax Sale several tracts of land on which the City of Eugene is holding
<br />liens, the amount of purchase price being $828.78, and that a deed from the County
<br />and receipted tax bills had been received, and the deed placed on record with the
<br />County Clerk.

<br />The Recorder presented an offer of Edwin L. Whisler to purchase from the
<br />City certain tracts recently acquired by, the City by Sheriff deeds and tax sale
<br />proceedings and offering to pay the full amount of liens and taxes and interest
<br />penalties and, costs. Said offer being accompanied by a certified check of
<br />$1000.00., Councilman Lamb moved that a permanent committee, consisting of the
<br />Judiciary Cl..ommittee, the City Engineer, and the City Attorney, 'be appointed to
<br />consider questions relating to property, assessments, and taxation, and that the
<br />present offer be referred to said comilli ttee fOl'" investigation. Motion was second-
<br />ed and carried.

<br />The Communication from the Commission of Public Works of the City of Portland
<br />relating to width of driveways to service stations was read, and the subject of
<br />driveways as relating to the City of Eugene was referred to the Street committee,
<br />and City Engineer.

<br />A resolution Memorializing Congress of the United states to Enact House
<br />Joint Resolution 167, Directing President of the United States to Proclaim
<br />October 11 of each year as IIGeneral Pulaski's Memorial Dayll for the observance
<br />and cOl~lemoration of the death of Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski was referred
<br />to the printing committee.

<br />A petition for the opening of Van Buren Street from Sixth Avenue to Blair
<br />S tre e t, being one of the street s already cons idered by the planning commission,
<br />was held, pending further report from the planning commission.

<br />Mayor Wilder stated that Chief Strait would be off on the 11th day of March,
<br />1930, as Chief of Police, and that it was necessary to fill the vacancy and
<br />nominate for the consideration of the council 1~. R. W. Hall as Chief of Police,
<br />to be paid a salary of $160.00 per month. Motion was made and seconded that the
<br />appointment be confirmed 'by the council with the understanding that the appoint-
<br />ment may be rescinded should it appear that the appointee has not the required
<br />qualifications for the office.

<br />Chairman Large of the finance committee reco@uended for payment the follow-
<br />ing bills, and a motion was made and seconded that said bills pe paid. The ayes
