Council was called to order by Mayor Large, . . <br /> . <br /> with all Councilmen present except Mr. Reid. <br /> Mr. McFadden from the McDonald Theater requested from the Council permission <br /> to conduct a bicycle race from Springfield to Eugene on Saturday, Novem'ber 10th, <br /> in connection with the Joe Brown show at the McDonald Theater. The matter was <br /> referred to the Police Committee with Power to act. <br /> The Judiciary Committee reported on the protest of the property OValers <br /> against the granting of a permit to the Walters-Bushong Lumber Company, that no <br /> use of the streets or sidewalks by the Walters-Bushong L'WIlber Company that inter- <br /> fered wi th the proper use of the streets by the public should be penni tted,but <br /> 6: that they are entitled to permits that comply with the requirements of the <br /> building code. <br /> The monthly report for General Fund operation was presented, which showed a <br /> surplus of $13,195.75 for the nine months operation. <br /> The Judiciary and Finance 60mmittees recommended that the City pay to the <br /> City of Klamath Falls, the $120.00 claimed by it, on account of coupons paid by <br /> Klamath Falls, but belonging to the City of Eugene. Motion was made and seconded <br /> to accept the recommendation, and the ayes and nays were called, Councilmen voting <br /> aye 7, nay none, absent Reid. <br /> The action of the Park Committee in purchasing from the Boyd Sign Company, <br /> three metal signs at a total cost of $5.00 was approved 'by the Council. <br /> The Police Committee reported that they would not care to make any recommend- <br /> ation approving the carrying of whi te canes by blind people for protection at <br /> I street crossings. <br /> A communication from the Ci ty Board 'of Health, advised the Council that the <br /> Board is willing tha t the residents of the transient area below the Ferry Street <br /> bridge should be allowed to reman there for the winter months, wi th the under- <br /> standing that the buildings should be torn down before spring. <br /> The Board also transmitted a record of matters acted on by the Health <br /> Committee since last March. <br /> The statement of bill s for the .E.'ugene Public Li brary for the month of Oc tober <br /> is filed. <br /> An offer of F. S. Beagle to pay the City $500.00 for Lot 1 of Foster's <br /> Addition on an installment plan of payment was referred to the Judiciary and <br /> Finance Committees. <br /> Bids were received for installing two toilets and partl tions in the Rest <br /> Cottage. The bid of Jesse J. Godlove for $lOa.OO and Williamson and Company for <br /> . $115.00 were the only bids, and on motion duly seconded and carried the bid of <br /> Mr. Godlove was accepted. <br /> At this time Councilman Reid appeared in Council. <br /> The application of Edgar A. Dugan was presented to the Council with inform- <br /> ation that residents in the neighborhood objected to the installing of a <br /> commercial wood:sawing plant at 1201 Willamette Street, and on motion his appli- <br /> cation was rejected. <br /> I Motion was made and seconded to allow F. L. Chambers the sum of $18.75, being <br /> one-half of three-fourths month rental from July 1st to 21st, 1934 for the Yates <br /> Hotel. It being the understanding of the Council that the County will pay the <br /> other half. The ayes and nays were called, Counci~men voting aye 8, nay none, <br /> ab sen t none. <br /> I A communication from N. R. Gaylord was read, forbidding the Councilor anyone <br /> else to trespass on his property at 526 Willamette Street, in .E.Ugene. The bid of <br /> Rober~ Johnsto~,~d Edward Larson. was o~ened for the demoli tion of the Gaylord <br /> build~ng. The~r b~d was for the sum of 125.00 and was accompanied by First <br /> National Bank Cashier's Check for $6.25, payable to the order of the City Treas. <br /> The bid being the only one received, was referred to the Building Inspector and <br /> Street Commissioner for a careful check as to the fairness of the bid. <br /> . <br /> I ~ <br /> I <br />
