The meeting was called to order by <br /> 1. Mayor Large. All members of the council were present. <br /> The minutes of the previous meeting, August 23, 1937, were presented and <br /> 2 ordered filed as there were no corrections appearing. <br /> Ii Councilman Fred Lamb, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, reported that thE <br /> II proper franchise between the city of Eugene and Postal Telegraph Company would be <br /> " ready for presentation at the next council meeting and requested the City Attorney <br /> 'I to communicate with the proper authorities of the Western Union Telegraph Company <br /> II <br /> " informing them that unless a proper franchise is prepared, they will be subject to <br /> J" <br /> ,I the 5% tax provided by the state law. The recommendation of the Judiciary Com- <br /> 31: <br /> I! mittee was upheld. <br /> 11 Relative to the petition requesting the council to remove the woodyard now I <br /> Ii being maintained by Lane County at 17th and High Streets, it was the recommendatior . <br /> I ~ of the Judiciary Committee that this wood storage space be left as it is and this <br /> 4 " recommendation was duly approved. <br /> II <br /> I <br /> II <br /> i' The Judiciary Committee reporting on the Anne Whiteaker claim, stated that <br /> " <br /> ,I 1 <br /> 'I a conference had been held in the office of the City Attorney with Judge Potter, <br /> I plaintiff's attorney. It was pointed out that Miss Whiteaker is willing to settle <br /> II for $200.00, but that the city could not see liabi~~ty to that extent, therefore <br /> 5, il no decision was made. / <br /> , :1 The $214.99 offer of Beatrice O. P. Tillman for Lot 1 <br /> Block 1, Maplecroft Addition, was rejected and a counter-offer of $850.00 extended ~- <br /> ,I <br /> 8 II and it was so ordered. <br /> / : <br /> II Letter from Mrs. A. B. Brown requesting an extension of one year on their <br /> I' <br /> II contract in which to redeem their property described as Lot 15, Block 4, Fairmount <br /> i! Addition was presented and it was agreed that this extension be granted on the <br /> Ii condition that the party pay this year's interest and taxes that are due and it <br /> 9 was so ordered. <br /> / Ii <br /> II Upon motion made and seconded the $350.00 offer of R. G. Marks for property <br /> I, described as: "Beginning at a point in the south line of 9th Avenue West if extend <br /> I <br /> ! ed 100 feet East of the West line of Lot 4, Huddleston's Addition, running thence <br /> i <br /> I South 136 feet, thence East 51.33 feet, thence North 100 feet, thence West 1.33 <br /> - I feet, thence North 36 feet, thence West 50 feet to the place of be~inning, all in <br /> 10 II Eugene, Lane County, Oregon~, was rejected and a counter-offer of 1553.84 extended <br /> and it was so ordered. <br /> / II The $400.00^offer of J. This recommendation was duly approved. <br /> , I <br /> I <br /> I, Councilman Hendershott, chairman of the Finance Corrmittee, recommended that <br /> $50.00 per month for a period of three months be paid Victor P. Todd, WPA Engineer <br /> " <br /> II for the local sewing project. The ayes and nays were called, councilmen voting <br /> ,I <br /> I: aye, Lamb, Hendershott, Reid, Page, Hanns, and Carlson; nay, Farrington and Bond, <br /> " I <br /> I, <br /> 13: absent, none. the allotment was granted. <br /> I' <br /> II <br /> :1 Councilman Hendershott, Finance Committee Chairman, reported the following <br /> II bills to the council with the recommendation that they be allowed and motion was <br /> " made and seconded that warrants be drawn.
