"..-
312

be approved. All councilmen voted aye and the recommendation was unanimously
approved. Mr. Tillman expressed appreciation in behalf of the Chamber of Commerce
~~ representatives and at this time called upon the representatives of the Eugene Wate
~~ Board as to their extending the water mains and providing water for protection.
~0 J. W. McArthur, Secretary and Superintendent of the~ugene Water Board made
a brief statement pointing out that the members of the Board had not had an oppor-
tunity to fully acquaint themselves with the details but that they had done some _
work on the proposed water protection. It was estimated that it would take in the
neighborhood of 5000 feet of ei~ht inch main to provide this system and the cost
of this would be approximately $2.00 a foot or a total of about $10,000.00. As to
the electrical stand-by service, he stated that part of it could be very adequatelE
worked out and was no problem at this time.

Mayor Large then turned the meeting over to Percy Brown, Chairman of the
Eugene Water Board. Mr. Brown called for a presentation of any pertinent facts
by those assembled. Statements were made by: J. H. Koke, Fred Stickels, and Lynn
McCready urging favorable action on the pmrt of the Eugene Water Board. It was
pointed out that this company was willing to pay the going rate for electrical
service and for any water that they might use. Mr. Brown then stated that inasmuch
as it had been the policy of the Eugene Water Board for a number of years not to
extend the water main beyond the city limits and if this request was acted upon
favorably a change of policy would have to be made which brought this question in
a class by itself because there could be no estimated revenue by reason of extension
to amortize the cost of ext~nsion. He .stated that the Board felt that they would
like to know that the general public would approve of such a policy. Mr. J. H.
Kokesgain addressed the group stating that we couldn~t overlook the employment of
300 men, the income of $50,000.00 a month, the additional money expended for logs
and the labor necessary to secure the logs and pointed out that the Oregon Electric
Railroad Company was giving them a very long, long lease on the proposed site to
get the industry here and again recommended that the Board proceed without delay.
Question was raised as to the Eugene Water Board adjourning from this meeting and
meeting in the Eugene Water Board ~uarters with the Industrial Committee of
the Chamber of Commerce to proceed with their deliberations.

No further statements. or questions being placed, the meeting was adjourned.

I

I

C.
