Thorn in the amount i of $6.00, referred from the previous council meeting, had been investigated, and /~ 7 ,i that facts were found to be as stated by Mr. Thom. A motion was made by Pennington'~ I and seconded by Brownson that the $6.00 be refunded to Mr. Thorn. The motion carried. 'j Iii Councilman Bond, reporting for the Police Commi ttee, stated tha t he had not : had an opportunity for a committee meeting with the delegation regarding the curfew 8 I'; ordinance which had been referred to him at the last council meeting. He said he I: would have a report for the next council meeting. II . II Councilman Bond at this time stated that several men had been called to the Ii Army from both the Police and the Fire Departments and that others had left for ~ better paid jobs, and that he believed it would be a good thing for the City ;; to ask for deferment for some of the men in both the Fire and Police Departments I': and th.::,t he would like to hear from some other councilmen. Couhcilman Brownson Ii stated that he was very much in favor of asking for deferment for policemen and I firemen and he thought it was in the interest of public safety to do so. Council- 9 I: man stewart said that the minutes would show that Be~epe aft he had made a request ~ regarding this situation some time ago. He said this was quite a problem and I' he thought much study should be given the matter before any action was taken. . I! Councilman Pennington sa id he thought the matter should be taken up with the Draft ,1 Board before action was taken. Mayor Large stated that he was sure the Draft ~ Board would not favor deferment of these men and that it.was a question whether I; the City should ask for deferment at all. No adtion was taken by the Council. J I: Departmental reports were received from the City Engine er, Police, Police , . I! Matron and also the sewage report from the Eugene Water Board. These reports ~ were ordered placed on file. I I'! A curb cut application was received from C. M. Duree, 446 East 13th Avenue, 10 J and the recommendation of the City Engineer was that the cut be granted subject r to approval of the Park Committee for the removal of the tree. The'recommendation ~ of the Engineer was adopted by the Council. I.. Ii The bill of .the League of OregQn ,Oi ties for the year, commencing July 1st, 1942, " and ending June 30th, 1943,- in the sum of $416.76 was read again at this time. Ii Mayor Large stated that the Eugene Water Board had already paid the sum of $50.00 i to the League of Oregon Cities and that it seemed this amount should be deducted llt from. the City bill. A motion was made by Farrington and seconded by Stewart :1 and carried that. the amount of $416.76 less the ~50.00 paid by the Water Board, be I.i paid to the League of Oregon Cities, the money to come out of the Emergency fund. lIOn roll call all members present voting aye; absent, Hawn. It Mayor Large explained that he had a meeting with the County Court and that Il': they were favorable to making a trade with the City for location of the swimming I pool. He said that inasmuch as Councilman Hawn, chairman of the Playgrounds 1211 Commission was not present , that the matter would be put over until the next 'Il meeting, but that he understood the Playgrounds and Parks Commission had a meeting I arranged thi s week with the County Court. Ii II Mayor Large at this time stated that a League of Oregon Cities regional meetin@ 13 Ii would be held at Seymour's Cafe at 6:30 o'clock on Monday, November 16th, and that Ii all C,i ty officials were requested and expected to be present, at this meeting. II Mayor Large stated that he also had a request from Roy Woodruff that all Ii City officials take part in the Armistice Day parade to be held Wedensday evening, 141'1 November 11th, at 7:00 P.M. and that they should meet in front of the Post Office ,I at that time. He said the City had the promise that the County officers would be [, there and that they were anxious to make this a fine parade and that he hoped the II Council members would be present. III A request frmm superintendent Cramer of the Eugene Public Schools, that the l following people be deputized as special police officers was read: H. B. Johnson, ill., Marvin Mason, R. L. Phillips, A. R. Hart, W. L. VanLoan, Ray Taylor, Mrs. Lillian 15 ,. Van Loan, Arch Brown, Dale Perry, Gaile H. Good, Virgil Reese, George Nelson, II Guy French, Mrs. Fay Robertson, Robert Christner, Melvin Moore, Winfield Atkinson, '.,.1. and James Clark. On motion made, seconded,'and carried, this request was granted 1-, on condition that it have the recommendation of the Chief of Police. 1:1 Mayor Large explained that Mr. E.H. Peterson was present and that he wished to 16 I address the Council after adjournment making a report on his recent attendence of Ii the O.C.D. school at Seattle. !i ~ i.;.
