E. Thorn in the amount <br />i of $6.00, referred from the previous council meeting, had been investigated, and /~ <br />7 ,i that facts were found to be as stated by Mr. Thom. A motion was made by Pennington'~ <br />I and seconded by Brownson that the $6.00 be refunded to Mr. Thorn. The motion carried. <br />'j <br />Iii Councilman Bond, reporting for the Police Commi ttee, stated tha t he had not <br />: had an opportunity for a committee meeting with the delegation regarding the curfew <br />8 I'; ordinance which had been referred to him at the last council meeting. He said he <br />I: would have a report for the next council meeting. <br />II . <br />II Councilman Bond at this time stated that several men had been called to the <br />Ii Army from both the Police and the Fire Departments and that others had left for <br />~ better paid jobs, and that he believed it would be a good thing for the City <br />;; to ask for deferment for some of the men in both the Fire and Police Departments <br />I': and th.::,t he would like to hear from some other councilmen. Couhcilman Brownson <br />Ii stated that he was very much in favor of asking for deferment for policemen and <br />I firemen and he thought it was in the interest of public safety to do so. Council- <br />9 I: man stewart said that the minutes would show that Be~epe aft he had made a request <br />~ regarding this situation some time ago. He said this was quite a problem and <br />I' he thought much study should be given the matter before any action was taken. . <br />I! Councilman Pennington sa id he thought the matter should be taken up with the Draft <br />,1 Board before action was taken. Mayor Large stated that he was sure the Draft <br />~ Board would not favor deferment of these men and that it.was a question whether <br />I; the City should ask for deferment at all. No adtion was taken by the Council. <br />J <br />I: Departmental reports were received from the City Engine er, Police, Police <br />, . <br />I! Matron and also the sewage report from the Eugene Water Board. These reports <br />~ were ordered placed on file. <br />I <br /> <br />I'! A curb cut application was received from C. M. Duree, 446 East 13th Avenue, <br />10 J and the recommendation of the City Engineer was that the cut be granted subject <br />r to approval of the Park Committee for the removal of the tree. The'recommendation <br />~ of the Engineer was adopted by the Council. <br /> <br />I.. Ii The bill of .the League of OregQn ,Oi ties for the year, commencing July 1st, 1942, <br />" and ending June 30th, 1943,- in the sum of $416.76 was read again at this time. <br />Ii Mayor Large stated that the Eugene Water Board had already paid the sum of $50.00 <br />i to the League of Oregon Cities and that it seemed this amount should be deducted <br />llt from. the City bill. A motion was made by Farrington and seconded by Stewart <br />:1 and carried that. the amount of $416.76 less the ~50.00 paid by the Water Board, be <br />I.i paid to the League of Oregon Cities, the money to come out of the Emergency fund. <br />lIOn roll call all members present voting aye; absent, Hawn. <br /> <br />It Mayor Large explained that he had a meeting with the County Court and that <br />Il': they were favorable to making a trade with the City for location of the swimming <br />I pool. He said that inasmuch as Councilman Hawn, chairman of the Playgrounds <br />1211 Commission was not present , that the matter would be put over until the next <br />'Il meeting, but that he understood the Playgrounds and Parks Commission had a meeting <br />I arranged thi s week with the County Court. <br />Ii <br />II Mayor Large at this time stated that a League of Oregon Cities regional meetin@ <br />13 Ii would be held at Seymour's Cafe at 6:30 o'clock on Monday, November 16th, and that <br />Ii all C,i ty officials were requested and expected to be present, at this meeting. <br /> <br />II Mayor Large stated that he also had a request from Roy Woodruff that all <br />Ii City officials take part in the Armistice Day parade to be held Wedensday evening, <br />141'1 November 11th, at 7:00 P.M. and that they should meet in front of the Post Office <br />,I at that time. He said the City had the promise that the County officers would be <br />[, there and that they were anxious to make this a fine parade and that he hoped the <br />II Council members would be present. <br /> <br />III A request frmm superintendent Cramer of the Eugene Public Schools, that the <br />l following people be deputized as special police officers was read: H. B. Johnson, <br />ill., Marvin Mason, R. L. Phillips, A. R. Hart, W. L. VanLoan, Ray Taylor, Mrs. Lillian <br />15 ,. Van Loan, Arch Brown, Dale Perry, Gaile H. Good, Virgil Reese, George Nelson, <br />II Guy French, Mrs. Fay Robertson, Robert Christner, Melvin Moore, Winfield Atkinson, <br />'.,.1. and James Clark. On motion made, seconded,'and carried, this request was granted <br />1-, on condition that it have the recommendation of the Chief of Police. <br /> <br />1:1 Mayor Large explained that Mr. E.H. Peterson was present and that he wished to <br />16 I address the Council after adjournment making a report on his recent attendence of <br />Ii the O.C.D. school at Seattle. <br /> <br />!i ~ <br />i.;.
