<br />i' our traffic situation wi th the caualty total lower than for the same period
<br />II' of 1945 as compared to startling increases in the number of traffic deaths
<br />,'j and, injuries for the state and nation. A comparison of crime statistics
<br />t generally shows even more gratifying results.

<br />Iii The Euge ne Fire Department is now accepting applic ations for addi tional
<br />~ volunteers with the completion of its third floor dormitory in the city hall.
<br />it With additional sleepers' it is hoped to have a minimum of twenty men on night
<br />'I',:, duty this winter, plus regular off-shift men and ten volunteers, giving us a
<br />i potential of fqrty trained fire-fighters.

<br />~ Training progfams in both police 'and fire departments are continuing
<br />',1 and'we are pleased to report that one of our officers in the police department,
<br />II,' Mr.. Leonard l~elson, has been selected as the new Chief of Police for Coos Bay,
<br />; assuming his new duties there as of Sunday.

<br />I' The summer's recreation program was completed September 1, wi th the'
<br />I'"l clo~ing of the Anchorage pool for the seaso'n. Attendance at playgrounds and
<br />J special events totalled more than 35,000, including 12,000 admissions at the
<br />i: poo~. Twenty-one persons were employed in the program at 'a total net cost
<br />r for the entire program to the city of $3,500.

<br />I : Activities at the Municipal Airport and Eugene Airpark for August
<br />: t show an increase in both commercial and private flying. Incomplete returns
