Update from the Mayor's Tree and Beautification Commission <br /> Ms. Bascom distributed a list of the 38 businesses receiving a City Pride <br /> Certificate this year. <br /> Ms. Bascom said most of the trees surrounding Sacred Heart Hospital's new <br /> development had to be removed because underground power lines are being <br /> installed. The gingko trees were left in place. <br /> Ms. Bascom said there were many negative feelings surrounding the post office <br /> project, which might have been avoided with more public education. She said <br /> one of the landscaper's machines was damaged by citizens who were angry <br /> because trees were cut down. <br /> D. Fairgrounds Transportation Report <br /> Ms. Ehrman said there is a plan for different entrances to the Fairgrounds. <br /> She asked to be notified of any committee formed to work on this issue and <br /> suggested that the council hold a joint session with the Fair Board about the <br /> proposed changes at some future time. <br /> Ms. Wooten said a major entrance is proposed off Jefferson Street which is in <br /> the middle of a residential area. She said this area already absorbs much <br /> traffic generated by the Fairgrounds. <br /> Mayor Obie said he has requested that additional data on parking be added to <br /> e the transportation report. He said parking has a major impact on the <br /> residential areas surrounding the Fairgrounds. <br /> E. Development of a Nursing Degree Program at the University of <br /> Oregon <br /> Ms. Ehrman has been serving on a task force formed to try to institute a <br /> nursing degree program at the University. She said the University does not <br /> feel it can provide such a program at this time due to over-enrollment and <br /> space constraints. Ms. Ehrman said the task force ;s now pursuing a more <br /> regional approach in which Oregon State University may be asked to offer the <br /> program with practicums available at local hospitals. <br /> F. League of Oregon Cities Conference <br /> Ms. Schue said the annual conference was held in Portland recently and went <br /> very well. The new board has been elected; the three officers are women from <br /> Astoria, Eugene, and Grants Pass.
