e

Ms. Smith stated that in the past, she has felt that the council has had enough
local issues to deal with and should, therefore, not spend time on issues which
do not have direct local impact. This, however, is an overwhelming issue. She
will support the resolution and asked that the council and the City Manager's
Office staff serve as the vehicle for forwarding correspondence. By supporting
this resolution, she noted that this should not be taken as a directive for the
council to take on other such issues.

Ms. Schue thanked Ms. Miller for bringing this item to the councills attention.
She agrees that the council should not ordinarily get involved in issues outside
their jurisdiction, but this bears directly on the community. She hopes the
media would come back in two weeks to see the council mail the letters.

Ms. Miller requested that the fifth full paragraph of the resolution be deleted
as that information does not seem appropriate or necessary. Consensus was to
delete the fifth paragraph in the resolution. Mayor Keller suggested posting a
copy of the resolution so that people could walk by and sign it. Ms. Wooten
stated that was a good idea. There are petitions in other parts of the state.

Res.
