W. Hamel, Ray Bradley (arrived late),
Jack Delay, Scott Lieuallen, Brian Obie, and Betty Smith.
I. Items from Mayor and Council
A. City-built Fire Pumper--Mr. Haws expressed appreciation for the
fine truck built by the City. He asked staff to pursue advising
the public of the money savings in this particular instance, and
advertising similar City efforts at saving money.
B. Better Eugene Committee--Ms. Smith reported on a recent meeting
in which efforts were being pursued for passing the budget in August.
Three ways in which Council members will be asked to participate
were: 1) Obtaining signatures for endorsement ads in the newspaper;
2) Distributing poster and lawn signs in each ward saying "Vote
Today"; and 3) Having City Council members make spot announcements
- on the radio.
C. Appointments--
l. Civic Center Commission--Mayor called Council.s attention to
the list of various appointments for this Commission, and said
there were a substantial number of volunteers in the community
who wished to participate.
Mr. Hamel moved, seconded by Mr. Obie, to approve the appointments.
Mr. Delay expressed concern, noting the confirmation process by
Council was to be a result of Council making suggestions on the
appointments to insure broad representation. He could not support
the motion, as he had not been consulted on any of the appointments.
He had made a recommendation in particular that persons from the
performing arts groups should be represented on the Commission
and noted a lack of such representation.
Mr. Haws asked what money was going to be spent on the Commission,
and how much of general tax funds would be included. Manager replied
the general tax funds would be a small portion, to include only a
share of Charles Kupper.s time. Most staffing would be paid from
room tax funds.
Mr. Obie asked if a week's delay in appointment would create any
problems. Mr. Keller did not think it would hinder the work of the
. Commission, although the Commission did want to have a meeting as
soon as possible.
532- 7/6n7--1
