<br /> <br />ECC <br />UGENE ITY OUNCIL <br />AIS <br />GENDA TEM UMMARY <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Workshop: Update on 2008 Olympic Trials <br /> <br /> <br />Meeting Date: February 8, 2006 Agenda Item Number: A <br />Department: Library Recreation and Cultural Services Staff Contact: Angel Jones <br />www.eugene-or.gov Contact Telephone Number: 682-6065 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />ISSUE STATEMENT <br /> <br />The purpose of this workshop is to receive an update and a brief overview of the 2008 Olympic Track <br />and Field Trials at Hayward Field. <br /> <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />In October 2005, Eugene was awarded the honor of hosting the 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials, a <br />10-day event (June 27 – July 6) that is expected to generate attendance of 170,000 and $18 million in <br />direct spending in the local community. As Eugene presents itself as the “World’s Greatest City of the <br />Arts and Outdoors,” this event will underscore for world audiences its relationship to recreation, sports, <br />and culture. <br /> <br />Co-chairs of the Local Organizing Committee, Greg Irwin (President, Oregon Track Club) and Vin <br />Lananna (Assoc. Athletic Director and Head Coach, University of Oregon Track and Field), will <br />highlight the successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Track & Field Trials. USA Track and Field CEO <br />Craig Masback will speak briefly about the bid and the upcoming event.
