The first award
was presented by the White House Council on Environmental Quality in recognition of outstanding
leadership and results through cooperative conservation. In August 2006, the White House Council on
Environmental Quality convened a Conference on Cooperative Conservation with the Departments of
the Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, and the Environmental Protection Agency. This historic
event brought together over 1,000 representatives of conservation groups and businesses, local, state,
tribal, and federal agencies, recreation enthusiasts, ranchers, farmers, hunters, and anglers. Their
mission was to exchange information and identify opportunities for building conservation partnerships,
and institutionalizing cooperative conservation, in order to enhance on-the-ground environmental results
by leveraging resources, promoting innovation, and inspiring citizen stewardship. The West Eugene
Wetlands Program was featured in the conference publication, Faces and Places of Cooperative
Conservation, as one of the nation’s best examples of “cooperative conservation.”

The second award received by the partnership was the “Award of Excellence for Adaptive Management”
and was signed by the leaders of seven federal agencies. The award recognizes the many
achievements of the West Eugene Wetlands Partnership in managing wetlands and associated uplands
for wildlife habitat and watershed health.

The eight organizations that make up the West Eugene Wetlands Partnership have worked together on
land acquisition, habitat restoration, environmental education, and recreation facilities development over
a 13-year period.
