For the
first time, the good work of Eugene’s neighborhood associations has
received national recognition at this event. The “Heritage Crescent
Neighborhood Livability Project,” a joint effort of Jefferson Westside
Neighbors, South University Neighborhood Association and West University Neighbors, was a finalist in the Multi-
Neighborhood Partnership category of the Neighborhood of the Year award. These neighborhoods were honored for
their work helping to ensure that infill and redevelopment would be compatible with each neighborhood’s character
and would contribute positively to the surrounding neighborhood’s livability. The submitted application is available
online at http://www.eugene-or.gov/nassociations.

Friendly Area Neighbors competed against 27 other neighborhood print publications and received a bronze level
award for its newsletter. Newsletters were evaluated based on criteria that included layout, consistency, content,
relevance and overall appearance.

Founded in 1975, NUSA is the largest non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to sharing information and
experiences to build stronger communities. NUSA encourages networking and information-sharing as a way to
facilitate the development of partnerships among neighborhood organizations, government and the private sector.
Eugene has been selected to host the 2014 NUSA conference.

For more information, please contact Michael Kinnison, City Manager’s Office, at 682-5009 or
michael.j.kinnison@ci.eugene.or.us.

Seniors Invited to Dance
One is never too old to dance. Five different types of dance classes are
offered this spring and summer through the Adult Services program. There’s
Folk Dance with a Flair, Ballet Barré & Stretch, Hip Hop, Line Dancing, and
Middle Eastern Belly Dancing. For those who already know how to barn
dance, there is a Barn Dance held at Petersen Barn Community Center the
third Saturday of each month.

The classes offer participants many benefits, including developing grace,
flexibility and core strength, getting in shape, improving posture, having fun,
and even – with line dancing – getting a brain workout. The Barn Dance is an
opportunity to socialize while getting a little exercise.

Dance classes are offered afternoons and evenings. The cost ranges from $3 for folk dancing to $50 for belly
dancing. Most are specifically for adults age 50 and older, but the hip hop classes are open to those as young as 16.

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
June 9, 2011
