As one of its initiatives, several City
departments are hosting track and field athlete sculptures in their public places.

A sculpture of a shot putter is in the Library’s entry garden, a discus thrower is
at the Eugene Airport and a high jumper is in the Hult Center lobby. JAS
Industrial, Inc. in Junction City originally fabricated the sculptures for the 2008
Olympic Trials. After a few weeks on display at the City locations, they will
travel back to Hayward Field where they will again be on display during the
trials.

For more information, contact Billie Moser at 541-682-6347.

Local Firefighters Volunteer on Project for Combat Veterans
Members of the Eugene Firefighters Association – International Association
of Firefighters Local 851 – are assisting St. Vincent DePaul, Keller Williams
Realty and the Home Builders Association in rebuilding a home at 1925
Echo Hollow Road, as part of a plan to purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed
housing for combat veterans.

The firefighters and other volunteers are pleased to be able to assist those
who have served their country, and who are now struggling with
unemployment and lack of affordable housing.

For more information, contact Eugene Firefighters Board member Wayne
Morris at 541-285-1863.

“From Print to Pixels” Community Conversation at Eugene Public Library
The words of a novel are the same in print or pixels. But is it the same to read on a screen as on
a page? In what ways do e-books serve, or change, the act of reading? Over time, how will
digital reading affect writing and interactions with information?

On Saturday, June 2, at 2 p.m., at the Downtown Eugene Public Library, share perspectives on
these questions at “From Print to Pixels: A Community Conversation about Reading in the
Digital Age.” The discussion will be facilitated by Mark Allen Cunningham. Cunningham has
published two historical novels, “The Green Age of Asher Witherow” and “Lost Son,” as well as

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
May 24, 2012
