RESOLUTION NUMBER 4809 <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION TO OPPOSE THE NOVEMBER 2004 GENERAL ELECTION <br /> BALLOT MEASURE 36 BY THE EUGENE CITY COUNCIL. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Ballot Measure 36, which is on the November 2, 2004, general election <br />ballot, would amend the Oregon Constitution to state that only a marriage between one <br />man and one woman shall be valid or legally recognized as a marriage; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Ballot Measure 36 would hurt Eugene citizens rather than protecting them, <br />by putting unequal treatment for gays and lesbians into our Constitution; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The Eugene Code states that the city values the dignity and worth of all <br />human beings and is committed to promoting justice, equity and inclusivity regardless of <br />sexual ohentation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Eugene citizens may disagree about social issues such as marriage, but those <br />disagreements do not belong in our Constitution. <br /> <br /> NOW THEREFORE, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EUGENE, A <br />Municipal Corporation of the State of Oregon, that the Eugene City Council opposes <br />Ballot Measure 36. <br />The foregoing resolution adopted this 13th day of September, 2004. <br /> <br /> City P&corder <br /> <br /> <br />
