Mormon volunteers have
donated nearly 4,500 hours at locations throughout the park system with
truly remarkable results. On Saturday, June 15, they worked their
collective magic in River Road, Bethel and Whiteaker area parks.

With the help of a team of Park Operations staff, more than 150
volunteers descended on Candlelight, Petersen, Irwin, Arrowhead, Maurie
Jacobs and Washington-Jefferson parks, as well as the western end of
Amazon Creek. Their accomplishments include spreading more than 100
cubic yards of chips, sanding and painting 21 picnic tables, keeping power
washers running for six straight hours, sifting and weeding the sand in
playgrounds, scalping and removing 10 yards of sod, and five yards of
blackberries and other weeds. After helping remove about a half-mile of
sod at Petersen Park, one volunteer commented “It was hard work and we
loved doing it. Thanks for the opportunity!”

Whaanga Kewene, LDS volunteer spokesperson, conveyed the church’s
Volunteers add chips to the playground at Candlelight
desire to help Eugene remain the beautiful city that it is. In times of
ongoing budget cuts, church members believe their efforts are needed now more than ever and expect this rewarding
partnership to continue long into the future.
