ATTACHMENT A ~) <br /> <br /> OFFICE OF THE MAYOR <br /> City of Eugene * Oregon <br /> <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> <br /> Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women of all ages <br /> and occurs in women whose only identifiable risk factors are being <br /> female and growing older; and <br /> <br /> Approximately 46 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each week <br /> and approximately 10 women die of breast cancer each week; and <br /> <br /> The five-year survival rate for breast cancer diagnosed at an early <br /> stage is currently 86% and early detection is our best defense as the <br /> cause of breast cancer is not known; and <br /> <br /> The American Cancer Society, Northwest Division, is dedicated to <br /> eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, <br /> saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through <br /> research, education, advocacy, and service, <br /> <br /> I, James D. Torrey, Mayor of the City of Eugene, do hereby <br /> proclaim the month of October 2004 to be <br /> <br /> Breast Cancer Awareness Month <br /> <br />and encourage all residents of this community to recognize the contributions of the American <br /> Cancer Society and support efforts to raise breast cancer awareness. <br /> <br /> <br />
