<br />. <br /> <br />~ <br />181 <br /> <br />Council Chambers, Eugene, Oregon, <br />February 27, 1933.. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Minutes of the adjourned meeting of the Common Council, held at the hour of <br />7:30 o'clock P.M., February 27,1933. Council was called to order by Mayor <br />Elisha Large with all Councilmen present, except Reid and Scobert. <br /> <br />Chairman Bond of the Fire and Water Committee stated that the residents were <br />still demanding a light at 21st and Lawrence, which the Committee had refused at <br />the last meeting, and that the Committee is still considering the request. <br /> <br />Chairman Zumwalt of the Health Committee recommended that the request of <br />Milk Distributors for a 50 per cent license reduction be' not granted. The <br />recommendation was on motion adopted. Mr. Zumwalt also stated that the revision <br />of the Meat Ordinance had been turned over to the Health Board. <br /> <br />..,.,.~.,~ <br /> <br />"~ <br />,:oJ <br /> <br />,"",", <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />At this time Councilman Reid appeared, and as Chairman of the Sewer Committee <br />reported that they met with the Plumbers to consider the question of a cut in the <br />license fee, and that various changes had been considered with some added fees, <br />which if the reduction was granted would not quite bring the present income as . <br />revenues of the Plumbing Inspection Department. On motion of :Mr. Reid, seconded <br />and carried, it was ordered that an Ordinance be prepared for consideration at the <br />next meeting of the Council, incorporating the license and fees as now under <br />consideration. <br /> <br />Chairman Hendershott of the Finance Committee offered a proposal of the Lane <br />County Abstract Company to turn over the daily take-offs for the sum of $120.00 <br />per anlmm, meeting the price submitted by Mr. Skene, and upon his recommendation <br />the proposal was on motion duly accepted. <br /> <br />The report of Mrs. Richardson, City Ma trcn, fa r Jarma.ry was read and file d. <br /> <br />Application of Merle Barger for a Hotel permit at 60 East 7th Street, approved <br />by Chief Bergman, was on motion granted. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Adverse reports on the proposed condemnation of building at the South East <br />corner of 18th and Emerald Streets submitted by S. M. Calkins, City Attorney, <br />C. F. Bergman, Chief of Police, and E. W. Zumwalt, Ghairman of the Health Committee <br />were read, and on motion it was ordered that the proposed condecill1ation be abandoned <br /> <br />Chairman Simon of the P01ice Committee recommended that for the present there <br />should be no replacement of the vacancy on the Police force occasioned by the death <br />of Traffic Officer, Jerry Hoyt, and that Mr.~Cronin be continued as Night Desk <br />Sergeant for, at least, through the month of March, and moved that a warrant in the <br />sum of $45.00 be drawn in favor of D. F. Cronin for salary for the month of <br />February. Motion was seconded and ayes and nays were called. Councilmen voting <br />aye, 7, nay, none, absent 1. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Recorder reported that Castelloe and Stocker had investigated and done <br />some work on t he repair of the po st light s at the entrance of the City Hall, and <br />had discontiwled the work when it appeared that the cost would run into a very <br />considerable SUill. The disposition of this matter was, on motion, referred to the <br />Fire and Water Committee and Building Inspector with power to act. <br /> <br />The follovv'ing resolution was read and on motion adopted: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />IT <br /> <br />Whereas, on Friday, February 24, 1933, Jerry Hoyt departed this life, and <br /> <br />Whereas, during the past five years he served the City of 1Ugene in its <br /> <br />Police Department, first as a Patrolman and later' as a Traffic Officer, which <br /> <br />position he held at the time of his death, and <br /> <br />Whereas, during the period of such employment he was recognized by the City <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />as a faithful, efficient and trustworthy employee; and by tho~e who knew him well, <br />as an officer who in the disch~rge of his duties combined with a sense of responsi- <br /> <br />bility the qualities of kindly sympathy and humane consideration of those concerned <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved, that while we bow to the Decree of an all <br /> <br />wise Providence, yet we deplore the loss of , a capable officer and a good citizen. <br /> <br />Be it further resolved that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />this meeting and a copy transmitted to the widow of the deceased as an expression <br />of our deep sympathy in this bereavement. <br /> <br />~ <br />
