COMMITTEE REPORTS AND ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM MAYOR, CITY <br />COUNCIL AND CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />Her Honor Mayor Kitty Piercy called the meeting of the Eugene City Council to order. She welcomed <br />everyone the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) Commissioners and said that they would be <br />introduced at the beginning of the workshop. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy acknowledged and thanked Richie Weinman and Pearl Wolfe for their work to organize <br />Project HomelessConnect. She also thanked members of the community who participated in the event. <br />Mayor Piercy said that the event was incredible noting that more than 1,000 homeless people were served. <br />She identified many services provided such as bike repair, pet care, and hair cuts. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy announced that a Neighborhood Summit would take place on February 17. She said that the <br />Asian Celebration would also begin on February 17, noting that this was an opportunity for celebrating the <br />Asian community and their cultural gifts to the City. She acknowledged the River Road Celebration that <br />happened earlier in the month and described it as a wonderfully organized event. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy read a letter from the mayor of Chinju, South Korea, one of Eugene’s sister cities, which <br />thanked the City of Eugene for its hospitality to students from Chinju who had visited and stayed with local <br />citizens. He said that he and his city would extend the same hospitality to students from Eugene who would <br />visit Chinju in July 2007. <br /> <br />Mayor Piercy expressed sadness and feelings of loss for the entire city because of the deaths of two <br />members of the Eugene Symphony who were killed in a car accident on February 11. She said that their <br />deaths were a big loss to those who loved them and for the entire community. <br /> <br />Ms. Ortiz said that she also attended the Project HomelessConnect event for several hours. She described <br />the experience as amazing, especially the way in which all people were acknowledged and treated with <br />dignity and respect. <br /> <br />Ms. Ortiz said that she had taped a radio advertisement with County Commissioner Bobby Green supporting <br />the Earned Income Tax Credit. Ms. Ortiz said that she attended a Police Commission meeting with Mr. <br />Poling. She shared that she was working on the Domestic Violence Subcommittee, which was working on <br />sexual assault, partner violence, child abuse, and neglect.
