MINUTES <br />Eugene City Council <br />Harris Hall, 125 East 8th Avenue <br />Eugene, Oregon 97401 <br />July 22, 2013 <br />5:30 p.m. <br />Councilors Present: George Brown, Betty Taylor, Alan Zelenka, George Poling, Mike Clark, <br />Chris Pryor, Claire Syrett, Greg Evans <br />Her Honor, Mayor Piercy opened the July 22, 2013, City Council Work Session. <br />A. COMMITTEE REPORTS AND ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL, AND CITY <br />MANAGER <br />The Mayor, councilors, and City Manager provided brief updates about events and activities in <br />the organization, on boards and commissions, and around the city. <br />B. WORK SESSION: Community Health Assessment Action Plan <br />Dr. Rick Kincade and Dan Reece, both of PeaceHealth Medical Group and Jennifer Jordan of Lane <br />County Public Health provided information on a local collaborative effort to combat health issues <br />related to smoking, obesity, eating habits and physical activity. <br />The presenters suggested several ways to mitigate the issues and reduce unhealthy patterns, <br />including: <br />• Reduce access to fast food and make healthier foods available. <br />• Encourage people to be more active. <br />• Encourage more farmer's markets, community gardens and ways to eat healthier. <br />• Protect agricultural land from development. <br />• Provide healthier snacks at schools, community centers and swimming pools <br />• Encourage a healthy way of life, including alternative modes, bikes, walking, etc. <br />The meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m. <br />Respectfully submitted, <br />Michelle Mortensen <br />Deputy City Recorder <br />MINUTES — Eugene City Council July 22, 2013 Page 1 <br />Work Session <br />
