The City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation program, Eugene, Cascades and Coast Sports <br />Commission, and Emerald City Dragon Boat Club teamed up to organize the event, which was the first dragon boat race in <br />Lane County. It was held on Dexter Lake and sponsored <br />by Guarantee RV Super Centers. <br /> <br />Twelve teams of 10-18 members paddled 40-foot dragon boats on <br />a prescribed 250-meter course. Proceeds from the H2O Paddle <br />Challenge will help send 13 local veterans to the National <br />Veterans Summer Sports Clinic, which will facilitate their <br />recovery by strengthening their bodies as well as overcoming and <br />improving their overall being and sense of self-worth. <br /> <br />The top four finishers were: <br />1.Oregon Association of Rowers - 01:03.78 <br /> <br />2.Community Team/ Wasserdrachen - 01:04.71 <br /> <br />3.Adaptive Veterans Team/The Warriors - 01:06.22 <br /> <br />4.LTD Elite Fleet - 01:08.19 <br /> <br /> <br />For more than 40 years, the City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation has provided diverse recreation programs and services <br />that enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. Recently, Adaptive Recreation has broadened its programming <br />to meet the needs of many wounded, injured and ill veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. <br /> <br />This zero-waste event met the City’s diversion goal of composting and recycling 75 percent of all waste. For more <br />information about this event, contact Adaptive Recreation Section Manager Andy Fernandez at 542-682-5311. <br /> <br />Free Vision Screenings for Young Children at Eugene Public Library <br />In August, the Eugene Public Library and Springfield Public Library will host free “See <br />to Read” vision screenings for children ages three- to seven-years-old. The screenings <br />are non-invasive and take only a few minutes. This service is provided through a <br />partnership among the Oregon State Elks Association, Oregon State Lions Association, <br />and Oregon public libraries. <br />The drop-in sessions at the Downtown Eugene Public Library will be held Saturday, <br />Aug. 2, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Aug. 13, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sessions <br />will also be held at the Bethel Branch Library (in English and Spanish), Saturday, Aug, <br />2, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and at the Sheldon Branch Library, Thursday, Aug. <br />14, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. <br /> <br />EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 <br />July 24, 2014 <br />
