The other finalists for the award were Café Yumm! and Essex General Construction. <br /> <br />The Bold Steps award, re-launched in 2014, recognizes Eugene-based businesses <br />operating with a triple bottom line, balancing the needs of people, , planet and <br />prosperity. The award represents a partnership between the City of Eugene, Eugene <br />Mayor Kitty Piercy, and BRING’s RE:think program. <br /> <br />Some of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s triple bottom line efforts include: <br /> <br />Many social equity programs, including wellness programs for employees and <br /> <br />an employee-led volunteer team that focuses on ways to give back to the <br />community. <br /> <br />The InnovatioNationprogram which connects employees with local schools <br /> <br />(TM) <br />to create excitement about a career in life science through different activities. <br /> <br />Zero waste certification at the Eugene site, diverting 95 percent of <br /> <br />nonhazardous waste from the landfill. <br /> <br />A Local Green Committee, an employee-led organization that works to improve <br /> <br />the Thermo Fisher Scientific Eugene site impact on the environment. <br /> <br />This year, the company worked with local beekeepers to contain and transfer <br /> <br />three swarms of bees to appropriate apiaries from their main campus. <br /> <br />Thermo Fisher Scientific will take the Bold Steps trophy back to their place of business to display for one year. For more information about the Bold Steps Award, please contact Waste Prevention <br />and Green Building Analyst Stephanie Scafa at 541-682-5652. <br /> <br />Early Literacy Training at Eugene Public Library <br />Saturday, Jan. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m., childcare providers and preschool teachers are invited to a training <br />on early literacy, “The Power of Play,” at the Downtown Eugene Public Library. <br /> <br /> Admission is free. This fun workshop will explore how young children use play to develop their <br />understanding of the world - and how adults who work with them can use play to help get them ready <br />to read. Learn about the different types of play, the benefits of play, and how to incorporate books and <br />early literacy materials into activities. <br /> <br />“The Power of Play” will be led by Aoife Rose Magee, Ph.D. (shown at left), a master trainer for the <br />Oregon Registry, and Cynthia Olsen, a Youth Services librarian at the Eugene Public Library. <br /> <br />To receive Oregon Registry Set II credits, call Family Connections in advance at 541-463-3307 or 541-463-3300.
