City of Eugene - dohansen-MooaY r~ouse
Historic Landmark Designation Application - Vgritten Statement Page 8
March 24, 2004

Although unconfirmed, family members have told the current owner that the house was
shipped to Eugene as a kit. Research indicates that the only company making kit houses
as big as this at the time was Aladdin of Chicago. Aladdin's records were destroyed by
fire, so the origins of the house remain subject to speculation.

The above described factors support the designation of the Johansen-Moody House as a
unique and significant Historic Landmark.

(3) In addition to EC 9.8165 (1) and (2) above, criteria for designation of a historic resource
that was moved, is primarily commemorative in intent, or less than fifty years of age shall
include the following considerations:

(a) A historic resource moved from its original location or a place that has historic
significance can be eligible if it has historic architectural significance or is the
surviving property most importantly associated with a historic person or event.

The Johansen-Moody House has not been moved; nor is a place nominated for
historic landmark status. Therefore, this criterion does not apply.

(b) A historic resource that is primarily commemorative in intent can be eligible if
design, age, tradition, or symbolic value has invested it with its own historic
significance.

The proposed Landmark designation is not primarily commemorative in nature. The
structure has historic value based on its architectural significance and association with
Eugene's broad patterns of history, as explained above. Therefore, this criterion does
not apply.

(c) A historic resource achieving significance within the last fifty years can be eligible if
it is of exceptional importance.

The proposed Landmark is over 50 years old. Therefore, this criterion does not
' apply.

V. Conclusion

As outlined in this application, the proposed designation of the Johansen-Moody House meets
applicable Historic Landmark designation criteria. The project furthers the goals of Eugene's
Historic Preservation program. We look forward to presenting it to the Eugene Historic Review
Board for review.

58
