When doing budgeting show figures that say this is going to be the running cost
of the building compared to what it would cost as a typical building.
This is a civic building and I like the idea you are trying to find out what would
make it welcoming. Can bikes ride through the space? Do I feel safe there? I
see it as being an attraction and I like the café idea. While I walk through the
building, can I see information about the building?
Lubricate other sustainability aspects. How can this project begin to change
permitting, financing, and other construction related issues?
Social Equity can be practiced from the design process to specified labor
standards for construction, maintenance and deconstruction.
Hoping people who are going to work in it every day have involvement in the
planning.
Need to consider social equity issues. Examples of who has windows in offices
and who controls temperature ranges.
I see so many courtyards and plazas fail because they are not child-friendly.
By using apprenticeship programs and other things that put people on the road to
good jobs and wages, rather than bringing in out-of-area labor, can have a
positive impact on both our economy and social equity. U of O had study on this.
In San Francisco consultants are required to comply with project values and
social equity concerns to be hired. Is there potential for having certain values like
this included in subcontractor requirements? Worth talking about this.
It can be done. Needs to be driven by the owners and written in the
specifications. In this case, the city. Example in the Eugene Enterprise Zone
where there are standards about responsible contracting are incorporated.
It’s okay to have a building that requires people to maintain it, rather than trying
to maintain it with technology. There is value in hiring people to do this.
What are studies that have been done to look at impacts of deconstruction and
design on social equity issues?
If it was a lovely place it would attract me. It could allow you to rub elbows with
the people who work there.
Talk with young people about this. Use their perspective on effective technology
Formats for input don’t pull in youth.
This project has taken a very different tact on Public Involvement and is actually
reaching young people for input.
What method of measurement will help with accountability to sustainable goals?
LEED is destructive as a design tool, but good as a rating tool. Design a good
building; then see what its rating is.
Value of LEED is accountability. But the problem is it gives points for doing
things, but no points for not doing things.
The need to get LEED points sometimes overshadows other values.
The value of a system, like LEED is that it keeps you on target.
Cost of getting certification can be substantial.
We are capable of being beyond LEED.
We don’t want to add things just for points.
There are other protocols like cradle to cradle, and precautionary principle.
