City of Eugene <br />City Hall Complex Master Plan <br />Community Forum #5 Report <br />INTRODUCTION <br />The City of Eugene held a Community Forum on concept designs for a new city <br />hall to foster dialogue and gather input as part of the continuing design process. <br />The meeting served to update and expand awareness of the ongoing master <br />planning process and how residents could continue to be involved. <br />More than a hundred people met at the First United Methodist Church, 1376 <br />Olive Street from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on October 18, 2007. Childcare, food, <br />Spanish and Sign translators, and Assisted Listening Devices were used by <br />Forum participants. The agenda for the Forum was: <br />Welcome <br />Project History <br />Reactions to 12 Public Buildings (clickers) <br />Small Group Discussion <br />What did you like or dislike about the buildings. Use adjectives. <br />Designs in Progress: Drivers and Concepts <br />Full Group Discussion: Exterior, Outdoor spaces, Entry way, Materials <br />Next Steps <br />The Forum opened with an orientation for newcomers to explain the multi-phase <br />master planning process, an update for all on recent city council decisions, and <br />an explanation of how the input from the Community Forum would be used. The <br />body of the meeting was dedicated to exploring what features and qualities would <br />make this special public building emblematic of Eugene now and into the distant <br />future. <br />Forum participants included a broad community mix, including many with no <br />previous design or architectural background. To help everyone engage in a <br />meaningful dialogue, the presentation began with a PowerPoint presentation <br />showing twelve diverse public buildings. Participants were asked to use clicker <br />technology to record their first reaction: Like it, Neutral, Don’t Like it. The Forum <br />then broke into small groups and wrote why they reacted to the various images, <br />using adjectives where possible to capture their thoughts and feelings. These two <br />
