(Matthew 5:9)

What is the Nobel Peace Prize?

The Nobel Peace Prize is given annually to the individual or group that has "done the most or
the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies
and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

The Peace Prize is one of several prizes established by a bequest from Alfred Nobel (1833-
1896), a Swedish chemical engineer and the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. The
Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo designates the Peace Prize winner. The recipients of the
other Nobel Prizes are determined by various Swedish groups and most have been awarded
starting in 1901. Since then awards also have been given for excellence in the fields of
chemistry, physics, medicine and literature. The award for Economics was started in 1968.

For more detailed information, visit the Norwegian Nobel Committee at:
http_;l!wlII!w.nQb~LnQL

In America, What, Where, and When

The Nobel Peace Laureate Monument in Eugene1 Oregon will recognize those Americans who
have won the Nobel Peace Prize awarded annually by the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in
Norway. Our peacemakers ended
wars, attempted to prevent wars, or are responsible for creating conditions that reduce the
political, economic1 and social causes of war.

file:/IC:\Documents and Settings\ceexelf\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKl om... 8/8/2006
