Would like to see minorities in government jobs. Staff represents minorities more.
Otherwise, see all white faces. Need to see actual people - not just token. I wish it were
as easy.

Complicated - community is diverse. Our community is scared to death of different
things going on. Not just bringing people into the workforce. Shouldn’t be surprised it
isn’t easy to fix. Five hundred things for City to do. 1000 for community. Complicated,
but doable. Community needs to know what City government looks like - don’t
understand how City is set-up. Lots of education needs to happen. Communities of color
busy talking about how to survive. You don’t always know about this.

All alluding to challenges of our community. Fear of systems, now aware of what’s there
for them.

Predominant whites needs to understand what daily life is like.

Not unique to minorities - to human living. Same issue for single mother. Priorities are
human priorities. First - have to feed your tummy. Then our ears open.

White dominant cultures suffer from same things as poor - same issues. We have a lot in
common. Like Guadalupe said - those guys in fear of being deported aren’t coming to a
meeting like this.

That might be important for City to hear. Instead of more diversity meeting - recognition
of basic living issues.

We need to look to each other to help with issues. Not save them. Showing up at events
- that’s good. Helping with mail-outs.

Is there something we’re supposed to do?

Yes, we’ll do brainstorming.

Eugene - love to talk about things, maybe not get things done here.

Hearing an “us” “them” theme here hasn’t gone well when people are away from
government. What’s been tried here? (Lots of giggles from group)

Lots of meetings in last 20+ years. Sensitivity training around diversity. That’s useful,
but need to develop relationship between government and community. With people in
community and people in government.
I’ve been able to do this, but not everyone has.

How does City government communicate?

Metro TV. R-G lists meetings - reporter assigned to city council. Neighborhood groups.

Communities of Color 15 July 12, 2006
