Communities of Color Meeting - Table #9

Note taker: Denise Smith
Facilitator: Mo Young
Participants: Angie Sifuentes
Kitty Piercy
Ken Nagao
Kenge Kobayashi
Sandra Stubbs
Sarita Black
Charles Dalton
Terry Leary

Thanks for coming.

Came because of Kitty. This even seemed to be the City reaching out to the
Communities of Color.

Question - Why are we here?

Here because - Optimistic and wants to give Kitty Piercy’s administration a chance.

Sense of obligation to her community. Doesn’t feel as hopeful. Helped with planning
this event.

Wanted to share some of his life experience during the war and racism he encountered.
Was 14 years when entered internment camp. For years felt ashamed and has not spoken
about his experience. Now wants to work on opening up. Here to tell his story and share
about the Hult Center monument. Memorial will be where groups of Asians gathered to
go to the camps. Hopes the memorial will help both Japanese Americans and others. A
step towards eradicating racism. Not just about Japanese Americans, but everyone.
Monument represents the constitution.

Here to learn. Learned about it from a chain. Felt it was a hand picked community.
What does the City expect of Communities of Color? How can we be ourselves and
voice our opinion? What does the City Council want? Racism is taught by parents and
schools. Won’t go away.

Thanked person for his story. Happy to see new faces. Encouraging. Wants to share
even if it’s area that’s been repeated before. Hopeful of the new faces in the room. At
end of day would like some measurable outcomes - goals.

Feels she is at the table in role as mayor and also as community member and parent of
micro Asian child. Hopes that for role of mayor - how to use it to make it a more
welcoming community. What should we be doing around public policy? Wants to be a
pleasure to have so many parts to the community. Persons’ story was our community
story, not just his family story. We are not far from the potential of the situation to repeat
Communities of Color 40 July 12, 2006
