ECC UGENE ITY OUNCIL AIS GENDA TEM UMMARY Work Session: Annual Meeting with the Human Rights Commission Meeting Date: September 11, 2006 Agenda Item Number: B Department: City Manager’s Office Staff Contact: Greg Rikhoff www.eugene-or.gov Contact Telephone Number: 682-5177 ISSUE STATEMENT This work session is the annual review of the Human Rights Commission, its work plan, and the work plans of its standing committees. The commission will provide a brief update on its accomplishments of FY06 and will highlight key work items for FY07 and FY08. The commission also plans to identify several emerging issues for discussion at the meeting. The City Council will be asked to review and approve the work plan. BACKGROUND The City Council and the Human Rights Commission (HRC) hold an annual meeting to review the work of the commission and discuss human rights issues in the community. The last meeting was held on October 24, 2005. At that time, the City Council approved a 12 month work plan. The commissioners are asking the City Council to consider the approval of a 24-month work plan that will carry the commission through the fiscal year 2008. RELATED CITY POLICIES The City Council-adopted Vision and Goals Statement include two statements relevant to this item: 1)Safe Community – a community where people feel safe, valued and welcomed, and; 2)Effective and Accountable Municipal Government – a government that works openly, collaboratively, and fairly with the community to achieve measurable and positive outcomes Additionally, many of the activities discussed in the Human Rights Commission annual report and included in the proposed work plan are related to the City Council Priority Issues on Race, Homelessness, and the City Hall Complex.
