In memory of Dwight Souers J ~,~- In May 2005, the Human Rights Program and the community lost a dear elder and friend. Dwight Souers, who served on the Human Rights Commission from 2002 - 2005 and was a leader in the human rights community for 30 years, passed away with family and friends by his side after a valiant fight with cancer. Throughout his high school teaching career at Willamette High School and his work after retirement, Dwight's impact on the community was huge and felt by thousands of people. Whether chairing the Accessibility Committee, monitoring Bethel School District diversity efforts, serving on the committee to build the University of Oregon Long House, or making fry bread and sharing information on Native American culture with area school children, Dwight had a knack for making every person feel special and valued. He is greatly missed and his gifts of kindness and respect have benefited us all.
