Indicatorsareimportanttoolsformeasuringprogresstowardsustainabilitygoals.TheSBITask <br />Forceacknowledgedthispointbyformingthreesubcommitteesthatinvestedconsiderabletime <br />exploringthedevelopmentofsocial,economic,andenvironmentalindicators.Throughthis <br />effort,thecommitteesrealizedtheydidnothavetheresourcesortimerequiredtocomplete <br />theprocessofdevelopingappropriatemeasurementtools.Thelastrenditionoftheindicators <br />workproducedbythecommitteescanbefoundat:http://ri.uoregon.edu/programs/SBJD/SBI_ <br />progress.html,underTaskForceProgress.Theindicatorspostedatthatsitearebynomeans <br />completeandshouldnotbeusedasexamplesofsustainabilityindicators.Theyarepostedsimply <br />todemonstratehowfartheTaskForcegotinaddressingtheissues.Muchmoreworkisneeded <br />todevelopeffectiveindicatorsforCitygovernmentandthecommunityatlarge. <br />OneoutgrowthoftheSBIindicatorsworkwasastudycompletedbySBITaskForcemembers <br />ClaireSyrettandLynnFeekinalongwithBobBusselfromtheLaborEducationandResearch <br />CenterattheUniversityofOregononlocalattitudesaboutsustainablebusinessandsocial <br />equity.Itisprovidedherebecauseitprovidesinformationthatcouldprovehelpfultofuture <br />effortstodevelopsocialequityindicators. <br />byRobertBusselandLynnFeekin,LaborEducationandResearchCenter,UniversityofOregon <br />andClaireSyrett,TheSolidarityNetwork <br />July2006 <br />ExecutiveSummary <br />Inthespringof2005,KittyPiercy,themayorofEugene,Oregon,appointedataskforceto <br />helpcreateasustainablebusinessdevelopmentstrategyforthecity.Thetaskforce <br />sustainablebusinessdevelopmentas?thesimultaneouspursuitofeconomicprosperity, <br />environmentalquality,andsocialequity.Sustainablebusinessesarenotwasteful,useresources <br />andarerespectfulofthesurroundingenvironment.? <br />TheTaskForcewasgivenanambitiouscharge:tohelpfashionacommunityconsensusthat <br />wouldmakesustainabledevelopmentanintegralpartofEugene?soverallapproachtoeconomic <br />development.Thisapproachwouldenablethecitytoreaptheofwhatisoftenreferred <br />toassustainabledevelopment?s?TripleBottomLine?:thepromotionofeconomic <br />environmentalsensitivity,andsocialequity. <br />Althoughthereisextensiveinformationavailableonstrategiestoincorporateeconomicand <br />environmentalconcernsintosustainablebusinessdevelopmentefforts,fewmodelsorexamples <br />existonhowtointegratesocialequityprinciplesintocommunitysustainabilityinitiatives. <br />Accordingtothemayor?sTaskForce,?socialequitymeansthatasamatteroffairness,sustainable <br />businessesconsciouslytakeintoaccountthewell-beingofthepeopleandthecommunitiesin <br />whichtheyoperate.? <br /> <br />
