By2020,localmedicalfacilitiesareoperatedwithTripleBottomLineprinciplesandpractices. <br />Theyareeasilyaccessiblebypublictransportationandallmedicalwasteisrecycledorreused. <br />Allhealthcarefacilitiesprovideorganicandnaturalfood.Educationandtrainingprogramsare <br />inplaceinthemajorityofmedicalfacilitiesandassistedlivingcenterstohelpentry-levelcare <br />providersmoveuptheladderofeducation,responsibilityandpayscale. <br />Allareahospitals,assistedlivingcenters,andallothermedicalfacilitiesshouldforma <br /> consortiumtolearnabout,shareideas,andsupporttheadoptionofTriple-Bottom <br /> Linepractices. <br />Areahospitals,assistedlivingcenters,andmedicalfacilitiesshouldcompletewasteauditsas <br /> astepinidentifyingthetypeandquantityofwastestheygenerate. <br />Areahospitals,assistedlivingcenters,andmedicalfacilitiesshouldconsideraskingthelocal <br /> chapteroftheOregonNursesAssociationforsuggestionsonhowtoincorporateTriple <br /> BottomLinepractices(themosteffectivesustainabilitymeasuresinPortlandhavecome <br /> aboutasaresultofsuggestionsfromnurses). <br />TheCityofEugeneshouldprovideincentivesforgreenbuildingandlandscapingand <br /> streamlinedbuildingcodestolocalmedicalfacilitiesincluding: <br /> Revisesystemsdevelopmentchargestomeasurableconsumptionofenergy <br /> insteadofnumbersinstalled;e.g.chargesfortheinstallationofatoiletare <br /> currentlyasmuchasforaconventionalone,yetitcostsmoretopurchaseanduses <br /> lesswater. <br /> Removebarrierstogreenbuildingwithinthecitycode;replacewithincentives. <br />CityofEugenewastemanagementstaffshouldassistlocalhealthcarefacilitiesin <br /> identifyingmarketsforhealthcarewastestreams. <br />Theorganicandnaturalfoodsindustryisprobablytheoldestlocalbusinesssectorthataddresses <br />issuesofsustainability.Itgrewoutofthe?back-to-the-land?movementofthe1960-70?swith <br />thepurposeofprovidingwholegrains,freshproduceandlocalproductstoconsumersbyway <br />ofsmall,family-runenterprises.Manyofthelocalleadersinthetradewereearlyadoptersand <br />proponentsofrecycling,compostingandgreenbuilding,aswellassocialandeconomicjustice <br />issues.Theorganicandnaturalfoodsindustrybeganbyaddressingpersonalhealththroughthe <br />ideathatweareonlyashealthyasthefoodweeat. <br />Theorganicandnaturalfoodsindustryisgrowingatabout20%annuallynationwideandthis <br />trendshouldcontinuegivengrowingconsumerconcernsoverenvironmentalandsocialissues. <br />EvenlargeretailerssuchasWallMartareenteringtheIfeffectiveactionsaretaken,local <br />companiesshouldcontinuetoshareinthisgrowth.Thenumberofstart-upsthatcontinueto <br />nichesfornewproductsthatthereisstillroomfornewproductsandbusinesses. <br />Increasedconsumereducation,businessincubationandsupport,andclusterdevelopmentcan <br />helpensurecontinuedgrowth. <br /> <br />
