<br />Cquncil met pursuant to adjournment of February 11,1929, and was called to
<br />order by Mayor Wilder with all Councilmen p:resent except Washburne, Lamb, and
<br />Large. '

<br />The Ord~nance granting to the Southern Pacific Co., a corporation and Swift &
<br />Co., a corporation, .their successors, lessees and assigns, the right to lay,
<br />construct and maintain railway tracks and to operate cars thereon and to transport,
<br />express and frieght thereon over al'ldacross High Street and along 5th Street in the
<br />City of Eugene., Oregon, having been .read the first time on January 22, 1929, and
<br />notices published for hearing on February 15, 1929, coming on for further consid-
<br />eration, the City Attorney recommended to the Council that the Ordinance be
<br />~nended by the addition thereto of Sections 5,and 6, to read as follows:

<br />Section 5. It is deeiood by the Common Council that having the spur placed as
<br />contem'plated in this. ordinance will secure to the City adequate service, and will
<br />be adequate compensation in the added convenience, to cover present values and
<br />future developmen t.

<br />section 6. This Ordinance shall take effect upon the grantees filing with the
<br />City Recorder a written acceptance thereof containing an agreement to comply with
<br />its terms.

<br />A motion was made, and seconded that the. proposed ordine:l.nce be amend'ed by tl1e
<br />addition of said sections, and the motion carried. The Ordinance as amended was
<br />read tl~ second time, and passed its third reading by title by unanimous consent
<br />under suspension of the rule, and was placed on its final passage. The ayes and na s
<br />were called, all present voting aye, nay, none, absent and not voting, Washburne,
<br />Lamb, and Large. The Ordinance was declared passe~ and numbered 7304.

<br />The Finance Committee recommended to the Council that the City accept the bids
<br />of the Shell Oil Co., the Union Oil Co., and the Standard Oil Co. of California
<br />for the furnishing of .gas to the City of Eugene in accordance with their bid,
<br />and that preferably all contracts be made for a three year term if agreeab~e to
<br />the bidders, and the Recorder be instructed to execute th,e contracts on behalf of
<br />the City. Motion was made, seconded, and carried to adopt the recommendation of' the
<br />Finance Committee.

<br />Councilman Monroe reported orally regarding the preposed parking plans for
<br />tour i s ts around the City Park bloc ks, and recomme nded tha t t he Engineer prepare
<br />plans a.q.d specifications for a cut back of the widfuh of Streets to afford additiona
<br />parlcing room around the public squares. Without final disposition of the matter th
<br />Council concurred wi th the report as to the 'preparation of 'preliminary Engineer's
<br />specifications.

<br />City Attorney Calkins suggested that there might be a possibility of amicable
<br />settlement of the 18th Avenue opening contest pending in the Cir'cuit Court, and on
<br />motion the matter'was referred to the Judiciary Committee and Street Committee foL'
<br />consideration.

<br />On motion Council adjourned to meet February 25,1929, at 7:30 o'clock P. M.
