' II The minutes of the meeting of August 9, 1937, werE presented and ordered
2 Ii filed as there were no corrections appearing.
:1
il Mr. Victor P. Todd, WPA Engineer, asked that the c,ouncil approve the mon-
il thly expenditure of $125.00 in order that the local sewin~ project might continue
II until the close of the year. After a short discussion, tr.e matter was readily re-
13 II ferred to the Finance Committee for consideration.
'I Mr. G. D. MacLaren, member of the School Board, ae,ked that their rental
il remain at $30.00 instead of $50.00 as recently increased t1Y the council. He sug-
gested that the room now being occupied by the Adult EducE.tion Department be
:1 severed from the School Board office and that the north eI.d of the hall be closed fJ-
11 off and a private office made for the new superintendent, the school board to fur-
nish all materials and labor and the city in return to leE.ve the rental at $30.00
i per month. Mr. ~acLaren pointed out that in his estimation this would reduce the
il heating and lighting bill to a very great extent and that to him $30.00 per month
I
'I would not be out of line. The matter was left in t,ne hanc.s of the Finance Commi t-
/4 r tee to report at the next meeting.
I Mr. MacLaren further asked that the council take action in preventing the
I
,
i Pacific Truck Company from parking their trucks in front (If the Frances Willard
School. He stated that the trucks being parked there was in itself a definite
danger to children and greatly inconvenienced parents bringing their children to
school. This was referred to the Police Chief, Carl F. Bergman, to contact the
I, proper parties to request them to park their trucks on thEl east side of the street
(5 Ii rather than in front of the school.
I
i In regard to placing in'proper repair the all~y e):tending from Willamette
I
II Street to the rear of the Eugene Hospital by the city, Councilman Carlson reported I
I. that the Street Committee did not wish to take any action without the instruction
Ii of the councIl to proceed by reason of the fact that this would be a matter of
:1
laying black top in the alley and would cost approximatel~r $100.00 of ~hich sum
II the hospital had agreed to pay ~50.00. Councilman HenderE;hott felt that the city
II should do this. Mr. BDnd believed that the hospital should stand the expense for
II all of it as any other property owner has to do. Mr. Marvin T. Y:arlick, manager
II of the hospital, stated that they could keep the alley in fairly good repair were
11 it not for the city cars and trucks constantly driving over it. Councilman Carl-
Ii son said that it was not a matter of city trucks but rathElr those of the Eugene
611 ~'-ater Board. Upon motion by Councilman Hanns and duly sec:onded, the question was
referred to the Street Committee with power to act.
/ Ii Mr. O. O. Beymer who had recently purchased the interest in the Yenne
Plumbing Company, as15ed the council to waive the $50.00 Master Plumber's License
Fee or at least to pro rate the amount for the balance of the year. It was pointe
out that the fee was established as a matter of protection for the local plumbers.
7 upon motion made and seconded, the request was denied.
I
II Councilman Hendershott, chairman of the Finance Committee, asked for re- '.
II affirmation of the council for purchase of a mimeograph machine for the city of
d
II Eugene. The tater Board is to contribute 50% and the cit~r 50%, the city's share I
I to corne from the emergency fund. Upon motion made and seeonded, the recommendatio
, 8 I of the Finance Committee was approved.
I Councilman Hendershott requested that warrants be drawn for payment of
i
I salaries to those who had completed service for the PlaygJ'ound Department, and
I further that those who have not as yet completed but who will shortly, be paid
911 from the revolving fund upon duly authorized requisitions"
( i
Councilman Hendershott stated that the Finance Corrunittee wished the coun-
I
10 II cil to instruct the City Recorder to request the department heads to prepare
estimated budgets for the year 1938 upon proper f.orms whieh had been furnished by
/ II the Secretary of State and this was so ordered. ~I
Councilman Hendershott, chairman of the Finance Committee, recommended
II
I. denial of the Thomas D. McHoes offer of $100~90 for Lot 2t Block 5, Hollenbebk
II
Addition and extended a counter-offer of $150.00. For Lo<~ 2, Block 8, Hollenbeck
Addition for which Mr. McHoes had offerred $64.44, the COIrunittee extended a counte -
11 !I offer of $100.00. Upon motion made and duly seconded, the recommendation of the
Committee was unanimously approved.
