<br />An Ordinance to provide for the demolition of certain buildings situated
<br />at 372 7th Avenue East in the City o~ ~ugene, and directing plans and specification
<br />to be filed with the City Recorder, and for the making of the costs a lien upon the
<br />property, had its first reading and passed to its second and third readings by titl
<br />under suspension of the rule by unanimous consent of the council and was placed for
<br />final passage. The ayes and nays were called, councilmen voting aye: Lamb, Reid,
<br />Bond, Farrington, Hanns, Page and Koppe; nay, none; absent, Carlson. The ordinance ,,..,
<br />was declared passed and numbered 8587.

<br />Resolution deferring the demolition, of Yates Hotel until July 1, 1939,.
<br />was unanimously adopted upon motion made and duly seconded:
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, The Common Council has on this date passed Ordinance No.
<br />8587 for the demolition of the Yates Hotel, and
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, It is the policy of the Gouncil to give a reasonable
<br />time for the vacation of the premises before demolition shall
<br />be commenced,
<br />
<br />THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Common Council of the City
<br />of hugene that actual demolition of the bUilding be deferred
<br />Until July 1, 1939 and that the owner be given until that time
<br />to vacate the same and that the City Engineer be and he is
<br />hereby directed to withhold the preparation for said demolition
<br />until June 1, 1939 at which time he shall comply with the
<br />Ordinance and go forward with the demolition of the building.
<br />
<br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City Recorder be and he is
<br />hereby directed to mail a copy of this resolution to Frank L.
<br />and Edith K. Chambers, as owners of the building.
<br />
<br />The City recorder requested that the council designate the city official
<br />to handle the city charity account. It was recommended that inasmuch as we now
<br />have a police matron that the same be returned to her supervision and it was so
<br />,31 ordered.

<br />Mayor Large complained about the tremendous truck traffic on Sixth otreet.
<br />Councilman Bond pointed out that the State Highway Department was to post signs to
<br />direct the truck traffic elsewhere. City Recorder was instructed to write a letter
<br />respectfully requesting this action.

<br />Councilman Lamb stated that there should be a re-routing of truck traffic
<br />between Pearl and High Streets by reason of the fact that the street is rapidly
<br />)33 being broken down.

<br />Application of Saul Paul to conduct a pawnbroker and/or second-hand dealer's
<br />business at 695 Willamette Street, was duly approved by the council upon the recom-
<br />,34 mendation of the Chief of Police.
<br />
<br />Mayor Large announced that Richard Spies and Comet Gibson, the two highest
<br />on the Civil Service eligible list, were selected to fill the openings in the Police
<br />Department, effective January 1,1939. The appointments were duly confirmed by
<br />I 35 the council.
<br />
<br />Councilman Farrington, former chairman of the Health Committee, recommende
<br />that Dr. L. G. Helterline, Meat and Milk Inspector, be appointed to that position
<br />for the ensuing year. Motion was made that the appointment be confirmed by the cou -
<br />ell and that said officer be placed on the regular payroll of the city at the salar
<br />of $219.44 (plus $30.00 per month for gas and oil) and that the Mayor and Recorder
<br />be authorized to issue warrant in payment thereof. The motion was seconded and
<br />,36 carried to confirm the appointment.

<br />Councilman Page announced that as yet the Park Board has not selected a
<br />chairman.

<br />An Ordinance repealing Ordinance No. 8359 passed by the Common Council on
<br />the 11th day o,f September" 1933 and approved by the Mayor on the 15th day of Sept-
<br />ember-" 1933, and providing that no further rebondlng applicat ion shall be accepted
<br />by the City of Eugene, had its first reading and passed to its second and third
<br />readings by unanimous consent of the council by title under suspension of the rule
<br />and was placed for final passage. The ayes and nays were called, councilmen voting
<br />aye: Reid, Lamb, Bond, Farrington, Hanns, Page, and Koppe; nay, none; absent"
<br />Carlson. The ordinance was declared passed and numbered 8588'.

<br />The Council authorized the issuance of fire insurance policies to J.K.
<br />Pratt Company covering Asphalt Mixing Plant ($3000) and Tool House and Yard Equipmen
<br />39 ($500.00)..
