Councilman Hawn stated <br /> I that he felt this ,place was a little different from the others; that there was a <br /> II shoe shine parlor and a magazine stand in front and that he hai been in there a good <br /> II many times and never noticed anything objectionable and in view of their record <br /> jMr. Dragoo should be given another chance and that he wished to move that the action <br /> Ii at-the previous Council meeting be reconsidered and that Mr. Dragoo's license be <br /> i recommended for renewal. There was no second to this motion. Councilman Farrington <br /> Ii stated that this was a very unpleasant thing for the Council to have to act on and <br /> , that he would like to be fair in every way a-nd that he was Hoping action might be <br /> Ijpostponed until they could hear a report from Mr. Dietz, the juvenile officer. <br /> . Councilman Bond sta ted the; t he fel t the same wa~ and a motion was made by Farringto <br /> iand seconded by Bond that action be deferred until the next Council meeting, and l <br /> '1 that Mr. Dietz be reque~ted to be present and make a report. This motion was carried <br /> I <br /> ! The Recorder reported at this time that beer applications to be acted on at <br /> !this time were: Newman's Grotto, '764 Willamette, McCrady's Cafe, 878 Willamette, <br /> iLee's Coffee Shop, 757 West 6th, and Snappy Service, 860 Olive. A letter addressed <br /> Ii to Halph E. Newman and Isaa c H. Newman, 764 1Nillamette, dated November 20, 1942, <br /> II from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission suspending this license for ten days was <br /> 2 fread at this time. Councilman Bond stated that their license had also been suspende <br /> lonce before during the Trail to Rail Pageant. Councilman Bond made a motion that <br /> (the applications for McCrady's Cafe, Lee's Coffee Shop, and the Snappy Service, be <br /> !recommended for renewal, and the motion was seconded by Hawn and carried. A motion <br /> II was made by Farrington and seconded by Bond that t11e ma tter of the license for <br /> 11 Newman's Grotto be held over till the next Council meeting. This motion was carried. <br /> Ii <br /> I; Mayor Large stated tha t bids for gasoline for the Ci ty' s use for the year 1943 <br /> ;'iwere to be opened a t this meeting and that as some -of the oil men were present, <br /> ~thebids would be opened at this time. The bids were as follows: <br /> 1. . It was the recommendation of the Finance Committee <br /> !i tha t this offer be accepted and the. recommendation of the Finance Committee was <br /> !!adopted. <br /> l:~ <br /> I The Street Committee had no report. <br /> .1 <br /> , <br /> 'I <br /> ;1 <br /> II Councilman Stewart, reporting for the Fire and Water Committee, stated he had <br /> ~a request for a light at 23rd and Lawrence. He stated that Lawrence Street was an <br /> lunimproved street at this corner and only one house in the block. He stated that <br /> 5 lit was a dark corner and it was reported that there had been several robberies in <br /> !that neighborhood. It was pointed out that a couple of other requests for new <br /> ~street lights had been deferred on account of the Water Board not being able to <br /> ~secure material on account of war restrictions. No action regarding this ~equest <br /> ~was taken by the Council. <br /> 'I . _ <br /> Ii Councilman Brownson, reporting for the Heal th Committee, stated that complaints <br /> Ilhad come to the Health Committee regarding conditions a t the New York Rooms <br /> I ~upstairs at 571 Willamette Street, and also regarding the rooms upstairs over the <br /> IICarroll Drug.Company at 730 Willamette. He said that the committee, together with <br /> 6 Jthe Fire Chief and the City Attorney had visited these places and found them un- <br /> ~lsani tary. Attorney Calkins stated that before anything could he done it was necessar.y <br /> tto give ten and thirty-day notices and that these notices have been sent by registered <br /> ilmail and are now running. " <br /> I <br /> I said that the tree on the south side <br /> I Councilman Hawn, reporting for the Parks, <br /> jOf 13th, west of Kincaid and tl"1e one at 4th and Jefferson, had been further inspected! <br /> 7 land that they were dangerous to pedestrians and that the cost of removing them would <br /> I~be $30.00 and $20.00. A motion was made by Councilman Hawn, seconded by Barette, <br /> !'!and oarried that these two trees should be removed under the supervision of the <br /> III <br /> 1,;Ci ty Engineer and the money should be taken out of the Emergency Fudn. <br /> Ii ..... <br /> I' <br />
