Hodson, 231 Lawrence Street for sewer reDairs in the amount of ~13.50 was referred to the Sewer Committee to report back at the next Council meeting. A letter from C. E. McLean, Manager of ' the Eugene Hotel accepting the franchise granted 'the Hotel by ordinance No. 8785 was read at this time. A question regarding the erection of. the steel pole for the support of the sign granted in the franchise was brought up and the Fire and 'Water Committee was instructed to inspect the pole and report back at the' next Council meeting. A request from the American Red Cross to erect a '3 by 6 foot sign, not illwninated" in from~ of 43 west 8th street was read. l}ftersome dis- cussion a motion was made by Barette and seco.nded by Crumbaker that this permission be granted, and Councilman Hawn suggested that this should be on apprqval of the Street CorJLl'llittee. Councilman Barette,.and Grumbaker agreed to the admendment that it be with t~e Street Cornmittees approval and on ~ote the motion'was carried. A letter from the Planning Commission recommending an ordinance requiring warehouses and other commercial establishments to provide for loading and unloading zones off from the street on all new construction and re-construction was read. . After some discussion this matter was referred to the Street Committee to confer with the City Attorney and bring in an Ordinance. . A letter from the United Air Lines, stating that the Corporate name of the company had been changed from United Air Lines Transport Corp. to United Air Lines, Inc, beginning December 23, 1943 was read and ordered. placed on file. A request from the University of Oregon, asking that M., M. Steddom 28 be deputized for police duties at McA~thur .Court and Hayward Field was granted. 27 29 I 301 31 , .1 32 I - 'I 33 i I 'I I ~, Letter received from different parties, regarding the rat control situation were prdered pl~ced on file. A report was made that Aaron Campbell, an employee of the Street Dept. had been unable to work for a month or longer, and on motion made, seconded and carried, a year's leave of absence was granted to Mr. Campbell. Councilman Hawn again brought up the question of the Council appointing a committee to make explanation to service clubs and other organizations regarind the proposed City Manager form to be placed on the May primary, some discussion was held but no action was taken by t?e Council. An ordinance adopting the report of the viewers upon the proposed opening of Fillmore street, from the alley south of 6th avenue west to 7th avenue west having had its first reading on March 13th was read the second time. A motion was made by Councilman Farrington and seconded by Davis that the rules be suspended and the ordinance was placed on its third reading was unanimously carried. The ordinance was read by title the third tiwe, and on roll call all Councilmen present voting Aye. Councilmen absent none. T:q.e Ordinance ~as decl~red passed and numbered 8787. . The matter regarding the steel pole to be erected at the intersection of Broadway and Pearl street, referred to the Fire and Water Corrmittee earlier in the e~ening was discussed again and a motion was made by Hawn and Eeconded by Farrington that the Fire and Water Committee be given power to act on this matter.
