<br />~16 <br /> <br />We will greatly appreciate an investigation to determine wheth~r stop signs <br />will help, and if so, the installation o~ these stop signs. <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />--... <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />~f <br />,....,., <br />........ <br /> <br />The follmying is some idea of what has caused us to be so concerned. <br /> <br />1. Whiteaker school has approximately 265 pupils._of which a very large <br />percentage use First Street going to and from school. <br /> <br />2. In one minor accident recently, one car went out of control and barely <br />missed two little girls on bicycles. These children were not in the street. They <br />were both on the parking strip. They had sto:pped their bicycl~s and werE; visitng. <br /> <br />3. A pick-up truck hit a sedan throwing it over the curb, across the parking <br />strip where~:it cameto rest with the back wheels almost on the sidewalk. This spot <br />is a bus stop. Had it been time for the bus to pass someone could easily have <br />been killed. . <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />4. A freight truck hit? panel delivery truck, ~cattering contents allover <br />the street. <br /> <br />5. A freight truck hit a jeep throwing it into the side'of a bus which was <br />parked to take on and discharge passengers. <br /> <br />'6. Two passenger cars collided knocking both drivers unconscious~ One car <br />hit the light pole on the Northeast corn~r of'First and Washington breaking the <br />pole off and setting it over in the middle of the sidewalk. The second car went out <br />of control, jumped the curb and continued through three lawns'on the East side of <br />Washington Street, finally co~ing to a stop. But not before completely wrecking <br />the front part of the third house (55 Washington St.). Outside of the damage <br />entailed, this accident caused great nervous shock to a young expectant mother <br />residing at this address, and could have easily endangered the life of both baby <br />and mother. " <br /> <br />7. A car turning off First on,to Washington misjudged speed and distance <br />and knocked a parked car over the curb and on to'the parking strip. <br /> <br />In each of these accidents had any children been crossing'the street, or in <br />some of the cases been on the sidewalks or in the yards they would have been <br />killed or at the very least badly injured. : <br /> <br />Mr. Seeger if you feel it would be any help, I will be very glad to appear at ! <br />the City Council meeting at a moment's notice and talk to the members and explain- <br />to them just how we all feei about this problem and give them a clear view of our <br />side of the case." <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />15 <br /> <br />It was moved by Crwnbaker, seconded by Hawn that the communication be receiv.ed and <br />placed on file and that the matter be referred back to the City Manager. Mmtion <br /> <br />A petition signe~ by Nick Retting~r and 18 others for the improvement of 13th <br />Avenue West between Chambers and Arthur Streets, was submitted and read. <br /> <br />It was moved by Crumbaker, seconded by Davis that the petition be received and <br />placed on file and that the necessary ordinances be drawn. Motion cafried. <br /> <br />ORDINANCES <br /> <br />Council Bill No. 300 - Re: Adopting the report of the Viewers upon the pro- <br />16 posed opening of the alley between 8th'and W. Broadway, Van Buren to Tyler, wa~ <br />submitted and read the first time. <br /> <br />It was moved by Crumbaker, seconded by Hawn that further action be indefin~tely <br />postponed. Motion carried. <br /> <br />Council Bill No. 301 - Re: Reclassiflcation of the East one-half of Lot 3 <br />17 in Bloc~ 3 of Packard's Addition (242 West 6th Ave.), from R-2 (apartments) to <br />1-2 (Light Industr~al), was submitted and read the first time, in full. <br /> <br />It was moved by Hawn, seconded by Davis that the bill be read the second time by <br />Title only. Motion carried. <br /> <br />It was' moved by Hawn, seconded by Davis that the rules be suspended by unanimous <br />consent of the Council and the bill beJ'read the third time by Title only. Motion <br />carried. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />It was moved by Hawn, seconded by Davis that the bill be approved. All Councilmen <br />present voting AYE, the bill was declared passed and numbered 9096. <br /> <br />~ <br />
