<br />DESKS, THAT BURGLARIES SHOWED A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY;
<br />THERE BEING 17 AS AGAINST 6 IN DECEMBER. SEVERAL OF ~HESE HAVE SINCE BEEN CLEARED.
<br />THE AVERAGE JAIL POPULATION INCREASED FROM 35 .TO 44. THIS INCREASE WAS OCCASIONED
<br />BECAUSE O~ INCREASED ARRESTS FOR DRUNKENNESS, DISORDERLY CONDUCT, AND VAGRANCY. THE
<br />JAIL SERVED 3,824 MEALS IN JANUARY AT AN AVERAGE COST OF 17.6 CENTS PER MEAL. THE
<br />ANNUAL AWARD PRESENTATION BANQUET WAS HELD JANUARY 15TH AT WHICH CHIEF JAMES A. PRYDE
<br />OF THE WASHINGTON STATE PATROL WAS THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKER. SECRETARY OF STATE, EARL
<br />T. NEWBRY, AND MAYOR JOHNSON ALSO SPOKE BRIEFLY. FINAL 1954 TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FIGURES
<br />RECEIVED FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE REVEALS THAT THE TOTAL NUMBER OF
<br />ACCIDENTS FOR THE YEAR SHOW A DECREASE OF 14.8%, WHILE INJURY ACCIDENTS WERE DOWN
<br />BY 12.5%, AND NUMBER OF PERSONS INJURED DECREASED 14%. TODAY WE HAVE GONE 51 I DAYS
<br />WITHOUT A TRAFFIC FATILITY.

<br />ON JANUARY 28TH, ~HIEF TED BROWN OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESI~NED EFFECTIVE AS
<br />OF FEBRUARY 14TH IN ORDER TO ACCEPT A POSITION AS DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY ON THE
<br />ISLE OF GUAM. THE POSITION WAS CONSIDERED TO BE AN ADVANCEMENT, AND THE RESIGNATION
<br />WAS ACCEPTED BUT NOT WITHOUT MUCH RELUCTANCY. ON FEBRUARY 12TH I ANNOUNCED THE
<br />APPOINTMENT OF MR. VERN HILL TO TAKE TED'S PLACE. MR. HILL COMES TO US WITH 20 YEARS
<br />OF POLICE EXPERIENCE WITH THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL WHERE HE HAD ADVANCED TO THE RANK
<br />OF SERGEANT IN CHARGE OF THE PATROL OFFICE IN THE EUGENE VICINITy. HE COMES WELL
<br />RECOMMENDED FROM HIS SUPERIORS IN THE HIGHWAY PATROL AS WELL AS MANY PRIVATE CITIZENS
<br />OF EUGENE' AND LANE COUNTY.
