LAST YEAR THE BIG ITEM DURING MAY WAS
FOR THE LANE COUNTY FAIR BOARD AGRICULTURE BUILDING WHICH AMOUNTED TO $335,376.00.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DURING MAY 1959 ANSWERED 29 ALARMS OF WHICH 9 WERE NON-
FIRE AND 6 RURAL CALLS WITH AN ESTIMATED LOSS OF $1250.00. THIS DEPARTMENT FUR-
THER REPORTS THAT THE HOME INSPECTION PROGRAM WAS COMPLETED DURING THE MONTH WITH
4588 HOMES INSPECTED. DURING JUNE 21-24 THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL HOST THE ANNUAL
FIRE CHIEFS, VOLUNTEER FIREMEN, RURAL DISTRICT DIRECTORS AND INTERNATIONAL MUNI-
CIPAL SIGNAL ASSOCIATION CONVENTION WHICH WILL BE HELD AT THE EUGENE HOTEL.

ACCORDING TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORT, A COPY OF WHICH IS ON EACH OF
YOUR DESKS, OUR CRIMINAL CASE LOAD DECREASED SOMEWHAT DURING MAY, THERE BEING
214 CASES REPORTED AS COMPARED TO 291 DURING THE PRECEDING MONTH. WE HAD 16
CASES OF BURGLARY REPORTED, 12 OF GRAND LARCENY, AND 52 OF PETTY LARCENY. WE
MADE ONLY 71 ARRESTS FOR INTOXICATION, DISORDERLY CONDUCT AND VAGRANCY OFFENSES
COMPARED TO 85 IN APRIL. AT THE MUNICIPAL JAIL WE BOOKED IN A TOTAL OF 212
PRISONERS IN MAY, SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE 203 REPORTED IN THE PREVIOUS MONTH, BUT
THE DAILY AVERAGE POPULATION WAS ONLY 50 AS COMPARED TO 59 IN APRIL. OF THE
TOTAL BOOK INS, 19 WERE ADULT FEMALES. WE SERVED 4936 MEALS AT .AN AVERAGE COST
OF 13.9~ PER MEAL. THE JAIL GARDEN HAS BEEN REPLANTED AND IS PROGRESSING VERY
WELL AS OF THIS WRITING.

II e
'I
I'
II
II
. ~ I
I
,
II
I'
I,
I:
,.
"
:\

,

i
l
I
I
[.
I
I
I
I
I
II
211
11
,
I
,
I

I
I
I
I
I
I
i
I
I
I
I
3

ALSO ON EACH OF YOUR DESKS IS A COpy OF THE PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT
MONTHLY REPORT IN WHICH THEY REPORT THAT THE fIRST MAJ~R CASE OF REMOVAL OF PLANTS
FROM THE RHODODENDRON GARDEN TOOK PLACE DURING MAY. ALTHOUGH THE NUMBER OF PLANTS
TAKEN WAS NOT LARGE, THEY WERE ALL CHOICE PLANTS. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ASSIST-
ING IN THE INVESTIGATION OF THIS CASE. IT IS INDEED UNFORTUNATE THAT ANYONE WOULD
TAKE PLANTS FROM THIS GARDEN WHEN THE EUGENE RHODODENDRON SOCIETY, PUBLIC SPIRITED
CITIZENS AND THE CITY HAVE PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO ITS DEVELOPMENT. ALL PLANTS
IN THIS GARDEN HAVE BEEN DONATED OR PURCHASED THROUGH DONATED FUNDS. THIS IS
PARTICULARLY SIGNIfICANT WHEN THIS GARDEN HAS RECEIVED PUBLICITY IN THE JUNE 1959
ISSUE OF SUNSET MAGAZINE. GICK MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE GARDEN
IS SHOWN IN A PHOTOGRAPH ON PAGE 72 OF THE JUNE ISSUE. THE GEORGE OWEN ROSE
GARDEN IS ALSO MENTIONED ON PAGE 190."

i!
:1
'I
1i

ll,

II
Ii

REPORTS OF COMMITTEES

,

ii
:1
:1
!!
il

1
\'
,:
II
i:
,I
q
:'

I

IT WAS MOVED BY MR.
