Cone at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber <br />on January 13, 1964 with the following councilmen present: Mr. Chatt, Mrs. Lauris, <br />Messrs. Swanson, Christensen, Deverell, Hawk, and Purdy. Mr. Crakes was absent. <br /> <br />The invocation was given by Rev. Malcolm McCallum, 'Minister of Education, First <br />Christian Church. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />The minutes of the adjourned meeting held December 23, 1963, as mailed to members <br />of the Council, were approved. <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />Proclamation - Canvassing votes cast in Bethe1-Danebo annexation election held <br />in City on January 7, 1964 showing votes cast for - 3,101; against - 901, and declar- <br />ing the area annexed to the City. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Mr. Chatt moved seconded by Mrs. Lauris to approve the canvass of votes. Motion car- <br />ried. <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br />Mayor Cone read his annual message to the members of the Council and citizens of <br />Eugene, calling attention to the increase in population and the increase in area of <br />the present City over last year, and stating that in his opinion Eugene would continue <br />to grow and be the center of one of the most progressive areas in the Northwest. Mayor <br />Cone also thanked the citizens of Eugene 'for their confidence in the program'for the <br />expansion of the City as evidenced by the majority vote in favor of the recent annexa- <br />tion, and that the present administration would do everything in its power to merit <br />that confidence. <br /> <br />3 <br /> <br />Mayor Cone called for nominations for Council President for the forthcoming year, <br />and Mr. Swanson nominated John Chatt. John Chatt then nominated Catherine Lauris. <br /> <br />Mr. <br />and <br />the <br />for <br /> <br />Christensen moved seconded by Mr. Hawk to close the nominations. Motion carried, <br />ballots were prepared. The City Attorney and the Mayor tallied the ballots, and <br />Mayor announced that Catherine Lauris had been elected President of the Council <br />the ensuing year.' <br /> <br />4 <br /> <br />Mayor Cone announced he had made the following appointments: <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Planning Commission -'Vincent J. Farina, reappointed for the term ending January 1,1968 <br />David M. Hoffman, appointed to succeed James Maxwell, for the <br />term ending January 1, 1968 <br />.
