<br />4~ <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />6/8/64 <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Council Chamber <br />Eugene, Oregon <br />June 8, 1964 <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Common Council of the City of Eugene, Oregon was called to <br />order at 7:30 p.m. PDT on June 8, 1964 in the City Hall at 11th Avenue and Willamette <br />Street by His Honor Mayo~ Edwin E. Cone with the following councilmen present: Mrs. <br />Lauris, Messrs. Chatt, Swanson, Christensen, Deverell, Crakes, Hawk, and Purdy. <br /> <br />The invocation was given by Rev. W. W. LaMunyon, president of the Eugene Minis- <br />terial Association. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />Mayor Cone gave a short talk entitled "Requiem for An Old City Hall" in which he <br />briefly reviewed the history of the building located at 11th Avenue and Willamette <br />Street through the period from 1903 to the present time. Mayor Cone pointed out that <br />the purchase price was $40,000 for the acquisition of t~e puilding and land by the <br />City of Eugene in 1915, and also named the various tenants who had occupied the build- <br />ing since its construction in 1903. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Mayor Cone then introduced Mr. Hugh Proudfit, vice president of Pacific First Federal <br />Savings and Loan Associa~ion, who pr~sented Mayor Cone with a check for $257,200 as <br />the balance of the payment for the purchase of the old City Hall building. Mayor Cone <br />in return presented Mr. Proudfit with the deed to the property. <br /> <br />Mr. Crakes moved seconded by Mr. Swanson to adjourn the meeting to the new Council <br />Chamber at the new City Hall at 777 Pearl Street. Motion carried. <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Common Coun~il of the City of E~gene, Oregon, adjourned <br />from the old City Hall at 11th and Wil~amette, was called to order at 8:15 p.m. PDT <br />on June 8, 1964 in the Council Chamber of the new City Hall at 777 Pearl Street by <br />His Honor Mayor Edwin E. Cone with the following councilmen present: Mrs. Lauris, <br />Messrs. Chatt, Swanson, Christensen, Deverell, Crakes, Hawk, and Purdy. <br /> <br />The invocation was given by Rev. W. W. Helen ~i1l, president of Eugen~ Women in Construction, <br />who presented a plaque of the Declarat~on of Independence to the City of Eugene. <br /> <br />Mayor Cone then presented the City of Eugene with a paint~ng of the old City Hall <br />at 11th and Willamette as a gift from himself and Mrs. Cone. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Mayor Cone announced the. winner of the Peace Essay contest - Mike Herring - and <br />presented him with an award. <br /> <br />The Mayor then stated that a meeting room in the southwest block of the new City <br />Hall had been completed and furnished by Mr. R. E. "Bill" McNutt in honor of his father, <br />Mr. Earl McNutt, a former mayor of the City of Eugene and a member of the Eugene Water <br />& Electric Board. Mayor Cone asked Mr. Earl McNutt to stand and be recognized, after <br />which Mr. Bill McNutt thanked the Mayo~ and Council and administration for the co- <br />operation extended to him in furnishing the room and in apprec~ation for the space they <br />were allowed to have in the new City H~ll to set up the memorial to his father. <br /> <br />Mayor Cone announced the plans for dedication of the new City Hall building to be <br />held on June 27, 1964. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />A letter from L. W. Trommlitz, pr~sident of Eugene Water ~ Electric Board was read <br />congratulating the City of Eugene on i~s move to a new City Hall. Mr. Trommlitz stated <br />in his letter that this was a culmination of many years of work by the City Councils <br />and people of Eugene, and the resulting building is a notable achievement in the de- <br />velopment of the community. <br /> <br />Minutes of the Council meetings held May 11, 1964 and May"25, 1964, as mailed to <br />members of the Council, were approved. <br /> <br />6/8/64 - 1 <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />L~ <br />
