He said <br />. first impressions are important to tourists and suggested an information center would suffice to <br /> direct customers to businesses instead of off-premise signs. <br /> Bill Maddron presented a copy of "Print - America's Graphic Design Magazine." He said it is ex- <br /> tremely costly to maintain the large signs and felt the proposed ordinance would remove the factor of <br /> smaller businesses trying to compete with larger businesses in sign installations. <br /> Section 2.34 - Reader Board Signs, Outlying Commercial District - was considered. Ed Stevens, <br /> manufacturer of changeable message boards, objected to the required 50-foot setback from the property <br /> line and said the proposed ordinance would not permit very many signs of this type in Eugene. <br /> Mrs. Niven said distract ion was the basic problem in considering regulations for reader boards and <br /> that it was felt their purpose is to announce services only. <br /> Ed Harvey, owner of Mr. Ed's Used Cars, said he owns his sign which will have to be removed along <br /> with the string lights under the ordinance. He said his prime concern was to attract people from out <br /> of town and that the cost of major repaids to bring signs into compliance with the ordinance would <br />. present an economic hardship.
