<br />HH. ,Tree and Shrub Cuttings - Councilwoman Campbell asked whether the Ci ty plans to
<br />{pick up tree cuttings placed in the streets, noting the heavy accumulation be- i:
<br />cause of recent weather conditions and the ban on baCkyard burning. Mr. McDonald,
<br />'expressed the opinion that because of the burning restrictions it didJ1', t seem '
<br />proper to ask citizens to pay for having the debris carried away. Councilman
<br />Wood asked if a spring vacation work program could be initiated, similar to the
<br />'summer program for young people not in school. Manager said there are no plans
<br />to pick up the accumulation of trimmings, that it is an expensive operation,
<br />and property owners seem to have accepted the extra cost of removing trimmings
<br />because of the burning ban. He said a pickup program also entails an equipment,
<br />problem. Mrs. Campbell said she was not advocating removing the burning ban

<br />they will not have to dispose of their own debris. He was reluctant to gi ve the
<br />'impression the City is going to become involved in removing trimmings; it would
<br />take, consideration of the cost factor and possibly a change in policy.

<br />Mrs. Campbell saw it as an advantage to the Public Works Department in that the
<br />debris might cause drainage problems if left to accumulate. Assistant Manager
<br />called attention to the fact that it is unlawful to pile trimmings in the public
<br />right-of-way and there have been citations issued in instances where property
<br />owners have been asked to "remove trash from the street and have not complied.
