e

e

e

M I NUT E S

Eugene City Council
City Council Chamber

February 12, 1986
Noon

COUNCILORS PRESENT: Richard Hansen (12:00-1 :15 p.m.), Debra Ehrman, Emily
Schue, Cynthia Wooten, Freeman Holmer, Ruth Bascom, Roger
Rutan, Jeff Miller.

The adjourned meeting of February 10, 1986, of the City Council of the City of
Eugene, Oregon, was called to order by His Honor Mayor Brian B. Obie.

I. ITEMS FROM MAYOR AND COUNCIL, CITY MANAGER APPOINTMENTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS,
AGENDA ADJUSTMENTS

A. Mayor's Guest

Mayor Obie introduced and welcomed Kia Cheleen, who is in the sixth grade at
Cal Young Middle School. He said Kia was born in Vietnam and has lived in the
United States for six years. Responding to a question from Mayor Obie, Kia
said she won a classroom drawing. She could have chosen a stuffed animal or a
helicopter ride, but she chose to have lunch with the Mayor. Mayor Obie said
he will look forward to seeing the report she writes about the council.

B. Crime in Eugene

Councilor Wooten said The Register Guard recently published a good report on
crime. She said there seems to be much duplication in crime prevention,
efforts to alleviate substance abuse, and the Neighborhood Watch program.
She asked the other councilors to consider forming an advisory committee to
assess the resources of the City and the community and to find ways to work
together to raise an awareness of crime and crime prevention. She suggested
the committee operate much as the Task Force on the Homeless and Hungry
operated.

The other councilors and Mayor Obie agreed to Ms. Wooten's suggestion.
She said she would like to meet with Police, Fire, and Emergency Services
Director Everett Hall and City Manager Gleason to discuss the committee.
She will present the results of the discussions to the council.

MINUTES--Eugene City Council

February 12, 1986

pa ge 1
