e

e

Mr. Gleason said that Councilor Ehrman had proposed the idea to encourage use
of alternative modes of transportation. It was hoped the event would be held
annually, and an awards ceremony, events, and displays were planned during the
week. Ms. Ehrman invited challenges and contests among City Councilors and
departments. She said commuter breaks were planned, along with information
kiosks around the community. She also said about 15 businesses, including the
University and Sacred Heart Hospital, were assisting with the event.
Ms. Ehrman said similar events had been successful in other communities, and
she invited participation.

Ms. Ehrman noted that increasing use of alternative modes could help the
actual usage rates meet the high alternative goals cited by Mr. Hansen.

Ms. Schue said she thought the week was a great idea, and she invited other
councilors to join in using alternative modes. Mayor Obie noted that a noon
meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, and he suggested that councilors be pre-
pared to report on how they got there.

Ms. Bascom suggested that the council issue challenges to the Planning Commis-
sion and the Downtown Commission, and she offered to work on that.

Mr. Holmer said he thought Alternative Transportation Week was an interesting
idea creatively addressed by staff, but he added that he did not think it was
an appropriate function for the City.

VI.
