<br /> Ms, Pate said that the commission was looking forward to working on such <br /> issues as downtown day ca re , She said that one of the problems women <br />e traditionally have faced in working was child care, She said the commission <br /> is working closely with the Joint Social Services system to identify the basic <br /> level of essential social services for women in Eugene, <br /> Ms. Pate said that the commission had particularly wished her to convey to the <br /> council was how pleased commission members are with the staff support they are <br /> receiving from IGR, particularly with the addition of Ms, Waggoner to the <br /> staff . <br /> Ms, Wooten asked when the boards and commissions recruitment event will be <br /> held, Ms, Pate responded that it would be held September 30, <br /> E, Youth Commission <br /> Mr, Dahl introduced two other members of the Youth Commission in attendance, <br /> Rhonda Smith and Cheryl Zwillinger, <br /> Mr, Dahl handed out copies of brochures produced by the Youth Commission, He <br /> said that this year the Youth Commission has concentrated on three major <br /> areas, One area was the downtown mall and the situation that exists with <br /> youth on the mall. He said that the commission had gathered input from the <br /> downtown merchants, police, the Development Department, the Downtown <br /> Commission, and other involved agencies, in addition to a survey that involved <br /> mall users including youth, merchants, and consumers Dn the ma 11 . This <br /> information was gathered together and given to the Crime Action Task Force, <br /> The Youth Commission has a member on that committee, <br />e Mr. Dahl said that the Youth Commission had formed the Youth Advisory Council, <br /> composed of young people from area high schools that meet with commissioners <br /> once or twice a month, He said that the commission discusses issues it is <br /> currently working on with this group to get its feedback. He said that the <br /> Youth AdvisDry Council assisted in preparatiDns for the 1985 Job Faire and was <br /> actively involved in the commission's downtown mall study, <br /> Mr. Dahl talked about the "Youth and the Law" brochure the commission had <br /> published in 1985, This handbook had been worked into some local curriculums, <br /> The commission had held its 5th Annual Job Faire, with an estimated attendance <br /> of 650 students and 90 employers, He said that the Eugene Area Chamber of <br /> Commerce, Eugene Downtown Association, and the Southern Willamette Industry <br /> Council had all served as co-sponsors, He said a complete list of sponsors <br /> was in the handbook he had distributed, <br /> Mr. Dahl said that during the upcoming year the commission once again planned <br /> to be involved with the Job Faire. The commission was preparing a handbook on <br /> how youth can become involved with government at local, State, and Federal <br /> levels. In addition the commission was producing a 3D-minute video on the <br /> status and future of youth in Eugene, They plan to use the handbook and video <br /> tDgether or separately for educational presentations to classes in schools in <br /> the city, He said that the Youth Commission was very interested in the new <br /> program of assigning police officers to schools.
