M Interested Applicants InterestedApplicants 9/26/2017 1:36:51 PM Personal Interest Contribution I have always been interested in helping make Eugene the best it can be while at the same time actively enjoying its qualities. This interest has manifested itself in volunteer participation on boards, a professional career to support and expand the educational opportunities for the community and actively engaging the resources that surround us, including our river. At a young age I was a competitive swimmer and this expanded to include a love of water activities and in the early 1970's swimming in the Willamette river, a time when going in the water within the city limits was still a novelty. My most recent trip down the river was in inner -tubes accompanied by two teenage daughters and their somewhat reluctant mother. My early career included stops in New York City (I hold an architectural license in New York State) and Portland (I hold an Oregon architectural license as well). These experiences of working and living in bigger cities showed me a life that was different than Eugene. Most of my career I have focused on working with people and institutions to provide the best facilities to accomplish their missions. I recently stepped down as the University of Oregon's architect and Associate Vice President for Campus Planning Design and Construction and opened a consulting practice focused on master planning. During my tenure with the University I completed over $1 billion of construction projects representing nearly 4 million gross square feet of space. I am a Past President of the Southwestern Oregon Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. I have With nearly 35 years of work in the field of facility design and master planning I have extensive knowledge of master plans, architecture, landscape and historic preservation. I can apply this knowledge to help provide advice as the Riverfront Renewal District's development proceeds. Most of my experience at the University is with creating and then implementing master plans, policies, and other guidelines to ensure the ideals of the campus are preserved and extended through its facility development. I also have extensive experience working with groups, both leading and participating as a member, as these groups work towards common goals and seek solutions. Most recently I participated with colleagues from the Cities of Eugene and Springfield and Lane County to create a vision for the greater urban area called the River Districts. My work on sustainable development at the University of Oregon was recognized nationally for our ground breaking Oregon Model for Sustainable Development and the campus was one of the first in the country to develop a campus -wide sustainability plan. More generally, I served for 6 years on the City of Eugene Historic Review board, and more specifically was a part of the 1994-95 South Bank Study advisory committee which took an early look at the potential for urban growth along the river. At this point in my life, I am ready and able to give my time to the community and this seems like a wonderful opportunity to do so. Page 80 of 112 y C7
